“A hidden gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2012

The Museum of The Order of St John was completely modernised in in the last year. It tells the story of the Order of St John from its origins in Jerusalem in the 11th centuary and its development into what we know as St John's Ambulance today.
The building dates from the time of Henry VIII, the priory housed the Office of the Master of the Revels where Shakespeare came to licence his plays. William Hogarth, Dr. Samuel Johnson and Charles Dickens also had connections to the building.
There is no entry fee but a £5.00 donation is suggested if you use the services of an official guide.
There are steps to negotiate, a spiral staircase is tricky for those who are not so mobile, there is lots of silver plate with a few examples of furniture and video presentations in the gallery present the historical facts. A visit to the 12th Centuary crypt and the more modern church add to the background of the Order of St John.
The toilets are very clean but there is no cafe in the building. There is a small shop where mugs, books, a few children's pencils etc are for sale. There are places to eat nearby. Well worth a visit if you are interested in History.
