“Great location - walk to tube stop for easy access into central London”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2011

What could be better than a walk or run on the common after a day of business or pleasure in central London? This hotel offers down time - a chance to breathe some fresher air, compliments of Clapham Common, with its acres of green, children's playgrounds, fishing lake, and more. The hotel and pub sits on the south side of the common, has a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, and a charming pub that spills outside to accommodate the local cricket players, footballers, joggers, who want to wind down with a beer and a few mates on a nice summer's evening.

We stayed in a third floor room, which was modern and clean, overlooking the common, and we had air conditioning which was very welcome since the couple of days we stayed there was rather warm. Food was ok, we experienced one good dinner, and one rather under par breakfast, but choices were plentiful.

Staff were friendly and helpful. Underground stop is on the northern line for quick access into central London or connection to other lines, and buses are also available. On site parking for those who drive there.

Excellent alternative to higher priced downtown hotels.

The room decor was average with little natural light and the mattresses were much too soft. But the bathroom had a tub and was recently and very well done with a powerful shower and lots of complimentary toiletries including bath salts! The tea tray had fresh coffee for the French press and biscuits - free bottled water in the fridge too. There is a selection of DVDs at reception for the large flat-screen TV and free WiFi in the rooms. The pub has a lot of character, but is expensive for very mediocre food. The Tube station is about a 10 minute walk.

Room Tip: ask for a room with no pub noise

The Windmill is a lovely pub right in Clapham Common, and only a short walk from the tube station.
My husband and I stayed one night, our last before leaving the UK, and were very pleased with the spacious room and bathroom with quality fittings and the all important comfortable bed. The room was very quiet.
We had booked a table for a farewell dinner with our daughters, and were disappointed wight the food. Pretty ordinary pub food. I'll admit, we did have high expectations as the Windmill had been recommended.
So a nice pub, very good accommodation, welcoming bar, and room to improve the food.

The windmill is a cool old hotel above a pub in Clapham, on the Common just north of downton London. Friendly staff and customers, plenty of other nice pubs, restaurants, stores nearby.

Room Tip: Front rooms may be loud on weekends.

I went there for a week with my husband. The hotel is very clean, has a high standard within the staff and clientel. The view with the common is fabulous and it is very close to the local amenaties with shops and restaurants close by. Great full english breakfast, but just a bit disappointed with the food in the resturant and a bit overpriced.Especially we appreciate the asian girl and night potter in the reception, they are professional and very friendly because we had some problem during our staying and before we arrived.Hopefully we will visit soon!

A friend and I (both American) recently stayed here for 4 nights, visiting our ex roommate and her husband. This hotel was great! Clean, quiet, large modern room (a twin deluxe), and the woman at the front desk was extremely friendly and helpful. Reading some of thesebther reviews, it's like they didn't stay at the same place. I plan to stay at the Windmill everytime I visit in the future (as long as my friend lives in Clapham anyway) and would absolutely recommend it. And it was inexpensive! £380 total! Cheaper than the hotels in NYC in a comparable area (West Village I'd say). I thought this hotel was charming, and the bartender even gave us wine after the pub had started closing up for the night, and let us sit as long as we wanted. No complaints at all.

Although the general standard of the rooms was quite good (except for the smell of smoke), it is the attitude of the staff and manager which lets this hotel down. What they don't seem to realise is that there is a huge choice of hotels in London and that a good hotel trade is based on repeat custom and recomendations. At this place it is clear from the outset that the focus is to get you in and out and take your money. I stay at various hotels throughout Europe every week and I have seldom met with such an indifferent attitude from the reception staff and NEVER met with such rudeness/arrogance from the management. Once you have checked in, the staff and management are clearly indifferent as to how your stay goes or anything they might be able to do to help - quite the opposite. We left this place with a very bad taste in our mouths and won't be back.
