The Morgan Guest House is not quite the hotel described in several London guidebooks, but it’s a good choice for a certain kind of traveler.
My wife and I stayed here for four nights during the height of the London summer season.
* What I Liked *
Our room was a double en-suite on the top floor. It was a bit larger than expected, and clean. The room was small and the stairs quite narrow, but we were expecting that.
If you have health or weight problems that make climbing stairs a problem, stay elsewhere. There is no lift. We are in good shape and still struggled to get our bags up and down the stairs.
The breakfast was filling, offering a traditional English meat- and egg-based meal plus muesli and corn flakes. We might have liked the chance to converse more with fellow guests, but most didn’t seem interested.
The location is excellent –two blocks from Victoria Station but quiet and in a nice Belgravia neighborhood. The contrast from the bus exhaust and hurly-burly crowds outside the station just two blocks away was amazing.
The price is decent by London standards, and the staff members were professional.
* Be Careful about Your Expectations *
Several of the London guidebooks said that the Morgan’s owners provide friendly and helpful advice. Rick Steves’ book from a few years ago called the Morgan an “entertaining experience,” or something to that affect.
I’m not sure if there has been a change, but don’t count on any friendly owner chats or local advice. We only saw two employees, and no owners. The employees were professional but did not go out of their way and didn’t seem to know much about London. They spoke as little as possible. Mostly, there is no one around except during breakfast.
That didn’t really affect us, since we had done lots of research beforehand. Just don’t stay here expecting a quaint experience chatting with jolly owners.
One or two guidebooks also mentioned the pleasant back garden. You could see the garden from our room, but it no longer appears to be open to guests. It is accessible only through the hotel office and was never in use.
* Overall *
If you want a good room in a great location and a reasonable price (by local standards), the Morgan Guest House can work well. I will probably stay elsewhere if we make it back to London, but my experience was positive overall.
Think carefully about whether you want your own bathroom or not. We decided to pay a little extra fo...
