“Good stay.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2013

Not perhaps as romantic ot traditional inside as the photograph or the name suggest but staying for one night for work we had an entirely acceptable time. The room was good value, the beer in the large bar well kept. Easy travel across the river to my meetings, close to the Tate Modern for a couple of hours wandering and close to a very good small rated corner restaurant only a few hundred metres back the road. Hotel facilities clean and basic but entirely satisfactory.

We stayed for one night. The location is excellent very convenient for all the attractions of the South Bank. The hotel staff are friendly and the service is good. The room was clean and spacious with a very comfortable bed. Tea and Coffee making facilities included a cafetiere, The bathroom was clean with plenty of hot water, shower and tub. The pub downstairs served reasonably priced food and drinks and the bar is open 24 hours to residents. In the room there was TV and wifi, also an iron and ironing board, an electric fan and even an umbrella. We had a room at the back which was very quiet despite the busy Blackfries Road nearby and the building work opposite. Altogether an enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quiet while the building work is going on.

Don't be put off by the pub downstairs. It's a proper hotel with great service. Larger than usual rooms by London standards. The pub is open for drinks for hotel guests 24 hours. Very friendly staff. We enjoyed every minute of our stay there.

Me and my boyfriend stayed here for New Year's Eve, we got given a twin room instead of a double room which we had paid for! The woman at the desk was very rude and just said she couldn't do anything about it. Bathroom was filthy, taps looked liked they hadn't been cleaned for weeks.. We had to push the single beds together and the floor where the beds were look like they hadn't been hoovered in months! Definitely wouldn't stay there again - only positive thing is that there was a nandos literally seconds away from the hotel.

I am extremely sorry for what happened during your stay, and I will definately be looking into this more closely, again I apologise for not being able to give you a double room as you requested.

My daughter and I stayed for three nights at the Mad Hatter and would definately stay there again. Our room was a nice size and clean, and the beds were comfortable, we had a room at the back so it was quite though there is building work just across the road but the noise was only slight and we didn't notice it until we were already awake but it did not disturb us. Nice size bathroom with proper bath towels so many places skimp on the towels and you find they will hardly go around you. We were impressed by the range of tea & coffee supplied although we only drink ordinary tea ! . The location couldn't be better with a little walk along the river and you cross the bridge to St Paul's, and Blackfriars Tube station is very close just over Blackfriars bridge. We did not have breakfast at the hotel as I feel that £13 is far too dear, why not charge less not everyone eats a large breakfast but we did have two evening meals which were very nice and for London not what I would call dear. The place has some character to it and I though the pub especially was lovely. The only thing with the waiter service in the pub did seem a bit slap dash not that that really matter to us and no one came to check if our meals were ok, which I think is all part of good customer service but this was the only minus.

Room Tip: Quiter rooms at the back.

we stayed here for 1 night and were very impressed with this hotel Just a short walk from Southwalk underground station approx 3 mins. a short walk over Blackfriars bridge to Westminster and all the tourist attractions. The hotel was very clean with large comfortable bed and the staff were friendly and helpful.
considering that this hotel is in central London very little noise from outside , the only down side was a dull humming noise from somewhere within the building this noise was on and off all night and woke my husband up twice. If I was staying in London again this would be my first choice for a hotel

This used to be a favourite hotel, especially when going to South Bank, National Theatre, Tate Modern events. But the prices have shot up, with a rack rate of over £200, and no longer is breakfast included at the weekends. There is better value to be had elsewhere, which is where I shall be going in future.

Room Tip: Avoid front rooms, they can be stuffy, or with windows open there is lots of traffic noise. Back roo...
