We went to The Brasserie after watching a performance at Sadlers Wells. We had chosen the restaurant because of its proximity to the theatre. I had read some reviews that were not too good but others praised the restaurant so we decided to book.
Due to the performance starting late and then running longer than billed, we got to the restaurant late. I apologised and was told not to worry that it often happened.
The restaurant has 3 levels, the basement area was empty when we arrived and the mezzanine area was very busy. Our table was on the ground floor, the same level as the bar and kitchen. The entry to the restaurant is through 2 sets of doors, we discovered fairly quickly why there was a portable heater behind our table, everytime people came in or out the draught from the door was icy cold.
Our order was taken fairly quickly but the extra dry sherry (only sherry on the wine list) was unavailable and the wine was also unavailable.
My husband ordered the crab cakes - it was one cake and I had the scallops. My scallops looked lovely but one was warm and the other nearly cold,( I ate the colder one first.) As the meal was part of an anniversary treat and we had already had the problem with our drink order I did not want to upset my husband with another problem.
For our main course I had the fish and chips which I enjoyed, the fish was tasty and the batter very light. My husband had the fish stew which he was not impressed with. There was lots of 'sauce' but the fish content was a little light.
Our table was cleared and then we waited and waited. A large group of dancers from the theatre had arrived and were seated in the downstairs area. The 3 members of staff then seemed to concentrate all their efforts on serving them. We had intended ordering puddings and coffee. It was as though we had become invisible to the staff, although they had to pass us everytime they went downstairs. After being ignored for 15 minutes we managed to get the attention of the man who we think was the manager. My husband asked for the bill and for the first time in the 42 years that I have known him he asked for the service to be removed.
