I have been to several of Ottolenghi’s establishments, including this one, the NOPI, before. However, this time I was very disappointed with the food itself.
Service was very good, however: the lady showing us in was very nice, our table, at the window had an excellent location, and our waiter was brilliant: polite, efficient, highly professional!
But the food, sadly, was disappointing this time:
We like to share and taste as much variety as we can, so we ordered a varied variety of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, from the cod, via the wood-pigeon and the pork belly, as well as the burrata, sweet potato and Valdeon cheesecake.
The cod dish was nothing special and the pork belly dish was not nicely cooked. The wood pigeon dish was so minute, you needed a magnifying glass to find it on the tiny plate!
Every dish, actually, despite priced at £ 9 to £12, is minute in size! So, you truly need to keep ordering many, in order to walk away, not hungry. It is shameless to price a dish of sweet potato, i.e. 3 small veges at £9, for example or that one bite of wood pigeon so highly!
You can also order individual large portions, but at £ 23-25 I really think, it is a bit of a rip off for a plate of fish. Walking around in London these prices compare very UNfavourably high for a main dish, I am afraid!
At our last visit, prior to this one, we liked the food but the deserts were not so nice. This time we enjoyed the desserts only: both the Lychee sorbet and our caramel ice cream with a rich chocolate sauce on the side, as well as crunchy caramel.
But we are not going to return to NOPI soon, as long as these high prices remain for such small amount of mediocre quality food.
Also, before a bottle of vine was around 20 pounds, now all are much pricier! Mr Ottolenghi has become a rip off person, i am sorry to say ! Shame.
