We bought a groupon voucher relishing the opportunity to experience a Micheilin starred chef's restaurant at a reduced rate. There was a warm welcome and then we were then seated in the restuarant at the back which felt like we were a little segregated and second class as it seemed that that was where all the groupon voucher visitor were parked. Although the decor is quite bizzare, This is the oldest fish restuarant in london, so where is that on the menu?
When ordering we found out that the advertised crab bisque was not on the menu, to my disappointment. However, decided on Prawn Cocktail, Steak and triple cooked chips and the cheese board. To our surprise there was not a supplement on the cheese board which was a very pleasing.
The prawn cocktail was very large with most of it comprising of iceburg lettuce and presentation was not at the forefront of whoever pas at the "pass". Although the marie rose sauce was good and the prawn tasted fresh. The steaks were cooked well to order, however quite tough. Our local butcher sources superior quality meat than that served, triple cooked chips nothing to write home about. The cheese board was huge, I'd challenged most people to eat all of it. We should have shared.
The most disappointing thing for us was not only the qualityand presentation but the attention to detail that you would expect from a Marco Pierre establishment. It was obvious that some of the staff were being trained and made mistakes, we were brought the wrong starters, used tables were relaided with no precison. However, I was gobsmacked when I asked the Restuarant Manager what the cheeses were?..... he said "I think that is.........." and didn't know two? That really isn't up to my expectations or the standards of MPW surely?.
The best descrption we could give is good pub grub, and we've had better. On a postive there was no discretionary service charge applied, what a freshing change.
