“a hostel with a distinctive London building”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

The location is very strategic, within short walking distance to Earls Court underground station and surrounded by Londeners flats.

There were also plenty of halal eateries at the area, hence not much of a problem for Muslim travellers.

The only downside of it was the unavailability of warm/cold water. During our stay, the water in the shower room was so hot we couldn't take our shower.

We were eight 40+ adults and we booked at this hostel due to it's location. They have obviosly looked at the reviews and have made great changes, The rooms were cleanand the beds comfy.

They were still redecorating whilst we were there, but this didn't interfere with our stay.

The only negative was that they placed us on the fourth flour, and this is a lot of stairs for us old cronies.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the lower floors, there is no lift!

The worst place I have ever had the misfortune to stay at. The most unfriendly guy sits at ted desk. I saw 3 different people fighting with him in the space of 20 minutes. There were people snoring in the rooms I've stayed in and he never cared about my complaints. PEOPLE SMOKED IN THE ROOM, went in/out of the room from 2 am to 7 am EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, leaving the door open and waking everyone up. Many times I had to take COLD SHOWERS. It is a very dirty place that's not worth 1 single penny

First they sent us to a room down in the basement floor. There was waste on the floor and beds, it was extremely dirty, mouldy and the lock was hanging loosely at the door.
When we asked for another room, one of the five men hanging around the reception told us it was impossible. After al long and difficult discussion (they din't speak much English) they sent us to a room on the second floor. We soon discovered that there was blood on the stairs,
the toilets and even on the blotchy bedsheets. When we asked for new sheets one of the receptionists refused. There was waste everywhere on the floor, the back-yard and some seperate rooms were filled all over with waste and old furniture. Our journey reached a new low-point when we discovered that the beds where crawling with bed bugs. Futhermore there was dried vomit on the carpet and rather disgusting yellow stains on the curtains. It was impossible to close the windows so it was very cold at night.

Actually the only one pros I can say about Barkston Youth Hostel is a good location - about 5 min to the Ears Court subway.
Price for that condition was to high. Quite dirty rooms, especially windows. The same problem in the kitchen and bathroom. Broken doors and shower in a bathroom on last floor.
What is more, we had problems with our reservation, staff was really unfriendly. After waiting for 40 minutes we eventually received a key to our room.

Just spent 2 nights here in a single room with shared toilet & shower. Room was basic, clean & so warm I slept with the window open! Toilet was kept clean, showers were a bit grim & the water was luke warm (the only fault I found). The building is massive & seems to be undergoing renovation work. Breakfast is available for £3. The location is great, few mins walk from Earls Court tube in a quiet street with plenty of places to eat & drink nearby. There are no lifts and lots of stairs so I'd not recommend staying here if you have walking difficulties. I found the staff friendly.
