I was very excited about going to Hawksmoor with my partner after hearing about all the hype and the good reviews I had read on trip advisor.
We had a 7pm reservation on a Tuesday and the place was already busy. We were asked if we wanted to have a drink at the bar first or be seated in the dining area. We chose to be seated as we were already pretty hungry.
It has a good atmosphere, it’s not a fine dining restaurant and the waiters are dressed very casually so you feel relaxed (although I think the tables are a bit too close together)
Our waiter was very friendly and helpful when it came to explaining the different types of steak & a suitable wine. We went with his recommendations and ordered bone marrow & scallops as starters, Bone-in-Sirloin (600g) & Rib-eye (400g) and we chose the beef dripping fries, mushrooms & a stilton hollandaise sauce for sides.
We were a little surprised when the starters came out so quickly, it felt like we had pre-ordered them. However the bone marrow was really good - it was nice to have something different - and the scallops were nice too but drenched in butter (which doesn’t leave a nice taste in your mouth). Less than 10 minutes after they cleared our starter plates came the mains and at this point we were thinking it would been nice to have a bit more time to digest our food.
Now here’s the thing: The steaks are HUGE! I’m not used to ordering steaks in grams and we later worked out that you’re eating about two 8oz steaks. The steaks were alright but we thought that the bone-in-sirloin was a bit salty and the rib-eye had a charcoal taste. As I said, the steaks are huge. We both finished them but we felt very sick afterwards. It is definitely our fault for not stopping when we were full but our theory is not to waste food (esp when you’re paying £30 for it).
Although we were really full I wanted to try the sticky toffee pudding as I had heard good things about it. I asked if we could wait about 20 mins before it came out and they advised us that that would mean we would exceed our two and a half table allocation (which they had already extended by half an hour from the allotted 2 hrs). I had already read about this allocation so we said that we were happy to go to the bar and wait a bit for desert. Although they do advertise this time limit, I think a two hr sitting isn’t long enough for a 3 course meal, especially one that involves 600g of steak. But the sticky toffee pudding was amazing and worth the 20 mins at the bar.
Overall, I’m glad I went but I won’t be in a hurry to return.
