“Beautiful Hotel in Central London Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2012

My boyfriend and I stayed here for my birthday treat. I wish we didn't have so many things planned because almost the best part was just sitting on the sofa watching TV for an hour and relaxing before getting ready!!

We staying in room two. The apartment was big and tastefully decorated. Everything was laid out beautifully for our arrival in the kitchen. Had we wanted to cook, we could have done as the kitchen was fully equipped. The bed was super comfortable and the sheets felt lovely. Not at all scratchy. Amazingly the room was completely quiet considering the room is just behind Regent Street! Plenty of room for hanging clothes etc. Lovely vintage photos on the wall.

Something to be aware of: the view from the balcony is into someone's office and the bathroom was a little pokey. The bathroom was beautiful, clean, a great shower rose and good water pressure and had lovely Ren products in there. But if you are someone who spends hours in the bath and likes to spread out, you couldn't do it here. Although in the bedroom is a large mirror and "vanity table" with great lighting for hair and makeup.

Dear EddyHobart,
Thank you for taking the time to share you recent stay with us on Trip Advisor. Sounds like you had a great time here relaxing in the Suite. Suite 2, our One Bedroom Deluxe Suites are very popular suites and possibly our most easily sold for their size, comfort and the fact they have a working fireplace. Bathrooms are a little small, but having a separate toilet helps.
Hope to see you again soon here at No5,

Regards

Yes, the location of this place is just excellent! you are in the middle of many good places and very close to one underground station. It is still an exellent place to stay in as well, clean, net and has very friendly staff too. The rooms are small, yes, but if you are staying in such a location you don't really want to spend your whole day looking at the room! We were out almost the whole day and only came back to sleep.I would surely go back to this place.

An amazing location, can’t believe we can’t hear the traffic off Regent Street when we’re a few feet away. Loved the apartment, everything you could want of need! Wish we could have stayed longer! The check-in service is great and the guys are helpful.

Dear Sean A T

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback.

I am disappointed to learn that your stay did not meet your expectations. We try our best to ensure that images on our website give a clear impression of our rooms and I’m sorry that you felt they were misleading. Regarding your comment about the ‘fitness room’ we do in fact state clearly on our website that all guests have access to a local private gym.

If you would like to discuss this further, please feel free to contact me directly.

Firstly, I'll say that its not easy to find a modern, stylish and comfortable hotel in the heart of London at a reasonable price (read: not Firmdale prices). Secondly, finding such a hotel with room that has a separate bedroom and living area, or alternatively a connecting room, is even more difficult unless you are ready to pay several grands for an insanely priced suite.

Thats where 5 Maddox St comes in, as it offers apartment style rooms at a reasonable price, with a great location. The hotel is nicely designed, but it also comes with some flaws. One is the lack of an elevator, which when travelling with children can be quite crucial. They do however let you leave strollers right next to the door on the ground level which is a big help.

The rooms are quite comfortable, but the layout provides some challenges. There is a toilet which is accesible from the halway, but its just a toilet - the sink in there is so small washing your hands is difficult. the bathroom with the shower is basically in a closet in the bedroom, which is fine otherwise, but again when travelling which children, is a bit problematic as you can't really use the shower if someone is sleeping in the bedroom. Personally I always shower late at night so I can go to bed refreshed, but it wasn't possible when my daughter was sleeping. Also, small detail, but there were no towel hooks in the toilet, you had to actually throw towels into the sink.

Our bedroom was thankfully on the inner side of the building, which was a life saver as the noise from the street is just terrible. I have stayed at dozens of hotels in busy cities from tokyo to new york, and this had to be the noisiest room (on the living room side, thank god) I have come across. The noise from Regent street is so loud that we were certain we had an open window in the room, but they are just very thin and poorly sealed.

Still, the living room came in useful, as did the small kitchen. Wifi at the hotel is very poor and strangely arranged - apparently each room has a wifi router which all accept a single connection, but you can also connect to any one of them, which means someone else was apparently using ours, and we were jumping between some other ones which sometimes worked, sometimes didn't. After we had to ask the concierge several times to help, they in the end gave the details for what I believe was their staff wifi, which finally worked.

Service was always very helpful and overall we had a decent experience, but there were several small details that caused a little head ache. With that said, I can't really think of a better alternative at the moment if you want an apartment style room, except maybe renting an actual appartment which I haven't tried in London myself.

Dear theshoemaker

Thank you for taking the time to provide your positive and constructive feedback.

I sincerely apologise for the difficulties you experienced with the internet connection, and since your stay this has now been replaced with a vastly improved system which is now a real asset to the property.

Regarding your comments about the street noise, it is worth noting that any suites with rooms facing the street all have double glazed windows to prevent any disruption to guests.

Besides the issues mentioned above I hope that you will give us the opportunity to welcome you and your family back to No. 5 Maddox Street.

Kind Regards,

Chris Mulvee

Location was great; it is just 3 minutes walk from Oxford Circus tube and is a great place to stay if you are interested in shopping. The staff was friendly and helpful, well equipped kitchen, but beds are small .
There is no lift and it really matters when you come back in the evening dead tired and your legs are revolting.

Room Tip: Try requesting for a room on the lower level, and with bigger beds.

When selecting a hotel so much for me is about the location so I always tend to weight that portion of my scoring higher. I really enjoy being close to areas in which I want to do things, in this case Soho. The location of this hotel is fantastic, right across Regent St. from the Soho District which is very lively and contains many great restaurants. Additionally, it is very close to Oxford Street which has great shopping. The tube station is relatively close, about 3 blocks to the north at the Oxford and Regent intersection (Oxford Circus). It is on the Central, Victoria and Bakerloo lines which provide access in all directions.

With the positives of the location in mind there are also some drawbacks, most notably the location. The noise from Regent Street if you are in a street facing room is quite loud. I had read a few reviews on this and must agree you best be a sound sleeper if you are in one of these rooms. Additionally, the shower is quite small, you can't even get out from underneath the water and it is difficult to fully turn in the shower (I am a fit person).

Overall I think this property is very good; here are the key bullets to help with your decision:

Biggest Pros:
1. Location to things to do (Soho District and Shopping)
2. Access to the tube (rail running in all directions)
3. Spaciousness of the rooms (very large for London standards)

Biggest Cons:
1. Noise from Regent Street
2. Small shower and bathroom (could be renovated with space available in rooms)
3. Rooms are a bit dated

I hope this helps with a general description of the property. Definitely a place to consider for your next visit to London.
