I stayed in this hotel about 6 months ago and if I had written a review based on that stay it would have been very poor but I gave it another chance this week and got one of the newly refurbished rooms which was very nice with good finishes and windows that kept the heat in and the sound out which is not the case for the non refurbished rooms.
I had a room at the back of the hotel on the 4th floor and although there is strange smell as you walk along the corridor a bit like leather in a new car the new rooms have good A/C, flat screen TV coffee maker and walk in shower. All worked well with the exception of the shower which was barely warm in the morning. When I mentioned it on check out I was told this was because the top floor was still being refurbished which is an unusual reason for a cold shower.
The public areas of the hotel have not been refurbished yet and I am sure before the hotel is fully adopted by doubletree they will be upgraded.
Breakfast is pretty average but ok with a nice outlook for the restaurant in the morning. The hotel is about 2 minutes walk from Bayswater tube station on the central line and you will walk past the Hilton Hyde Park on the way. Having stayed at both I would probably say go for the Doubletree if you know you can get a refurbished room. If you walk it the other direction it is about 10 min walk to Notting Hill tube station.
