“Abysmal rooms”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013

I stayed one night... that was enough. I requested an accessible room as I was on crutches. When I saw the room I asked if they had a REFURBISHED accessible room, and was told they were being done last (thanks for that!). I then said, I'll cope stepping into a bath - just give me a refurbished room. I was then told that was the only room they had. I find that hard to believe as the hotel was not busy when I was there.

Outside my room window (when I went to investigate why the curtains were blowing in a breeze -- only to find the window wasn't actually open, just falling apart) I could see something directly outside. In the morning, when I was woken up at 7am but raucous shouting from the builders, I could see it was a skip full of old bits of the building. Then the drilling and hammering began. By 8am I was out of there to try to get some breakfast.

The breakfast at the hotel was overpriced, and frankly I wouldn't have trusted its quality or safety. So I made it around the corner to Bayswater Road where there was an emergency McDonalds.

This hotel is dire. The rooms that have not been refurbished should not be being sold. When asked how my stay was at check-out I laughed. The bed was springy (I could hear it ping) and sunk in the middle, the bathroom was from the 1980s, the whole thing needing ripped out. I asked how long it has been a DoubleTree and was told flatly "we're not yet a double tree". That's funny, cos everywhere you look there are signs saying otherwise, a hhonors check-in desk, and on the doubleteee website where I booked it based on the lovely room photos. Did someone say Trade Descriptions Act...?

I've finally had it with Hilton. I'm cutting up that hhonors card.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for the valued feedback although no solace to you that room is currently being refurbished bu the builders and each week now we are getting more and more superb rooms back that are transforming the hotel. We currently operate as a Hilton affiliate and will rebrand to Doubletree this coming summer. We all really hope you will reconsider and come and experience the huge improvements for yourself. Please feel free to contact me if I can indeed help with this in any way.

Best Regards

“Hand the builders a cup of tea...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2013

... that's what you would like to do as you check into your room. Contractors scaffolding literally abuts your window. However, as the window is jammed shut any friendly jesture is restricted to a wave as the builders clatter by.
You've read the other reviews and you may be wondering what's going on. The place is in the process of a significant - and necessary refurb. Cant tell you about the 'done over' rooms but can comment on the 'still to do' rooms and the fabric of the Hotel generally.
Our room was small with a big TV. The bathroom was very small - impossible to face the basin and mirror. It was also insanitary with black mould and grunge a plenty. The rooms aircon was quirky, noisy and not especially effective.
The hotel fabric overall was tired to the point of comatose. Some bits were dangerous (crumbling step to front entrance). I understand the place is presently run by a Hilton associate and due to fall into the Hilton family proper in a month or two's time.
There is a lot to like about this Hotel - it's position opposite Kensington Gardens is superb - for the Place, the Museums, for West/Central London, for Portabella Rd, for buzzy' Notting Hill Gate is one stroll away or Queensway is in the other direction. Staff are friendly and efficient - they don't deserve this substandard Hotel. Beds are comfortable. Breakfast ok. Pleasant walk to some good ethnic restaurants (see separate reviews).
But at present it aint 4 star. It aint value for money and Hilton is probably going to have to address a reputation issue on takeover and after refurbishment.

Room Tip: Insist on a refurbed room. Keep away from the noise to the front of the Hotel overlooking Bayswater...

“Positives and Negatives”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2013

If you've stayed in a hotel in any other major city, you will find that the size of this hotel was comparable to half the size of a motel room, and for the price (£400 per night = $800) I've decided to give this hotel a 2 star rating. Thank goodness we used our points for our stay instead of direct payment.

Great location, it's near the Queensway underground with a whole block of overpriced shopping but affordable (by American standards) food - mainly Asian cuisine; it's just too bad that the hotel concierge did not tell us about convenient local spots leaving the guest guessing.

The room service for cleaning was excellent, and the beds were very comfortable. Additionally, our credit card gave us the opportunity to get inclusive breakfast in the lobby which was great (both service and food).

Conclusively, this hotel is located in a nice area so if you have money to burn then great, but otherwise, keep looking. Hotels in London are unfortunately, in general, extremely small for their price.

“Renovated room, friendly staff and great location!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

As soon as I checked in, I was welcomed by receptionist Miguel with a friendly smile and was very pleased to let me know that the hotel was recently being renovated. The room was beautifully decorated and cosy. Huge flat screen TV and delicious Nespresso coffee maker. The hotel staff are so nice, that whenever I am in London again, that will be my first option. Good price, excellent location, delicious breakfast and outstanding customer service. What else can I say to helping you choosing your next hotel in London? 9 out of 10, indeed!

“Four star hotel? Really?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013 via mobile

We stayed overnight in The London Hyde Park Hotel on the 26th January and found it and booked through the Hilton website. We were lead to believe that this hotel was a four star treat, with warm cookies served on arrival and outstanding customer services in line with the Hilton Doubletree brand.

Upon receiving our 'No cancellation policy' booking form, we were informed that this hotel was in fact undergoing renovation and incorporation into the Hilton Doubletree brand. For the same price, we could have booked into another hotel of the same brand and feel totally let down by the misleading information on Hilton.com.

I came onto TripAdvisor to check out the reviews of this website, which I will do prior to booking any hotel in the future, we received advice saying we should request a room on one of the upper floors. My partner also requested special arrangements be made through Hilton's Reservation Centre as this was supposed to be a romantic pre-Valentines day getaway weekend.

When we checked in, we were told we had to take the room that had been pre-assigned and that there were no other options available - we were allocated a room right under where the renovations were taking place and the noise was quite unbearable throughout the day. Luckily we had plans and opted not to Return to the room or hotel until it was time to sleep. The special arrangements that I mentioned before, confirmed the night before with Hilton Reservations, were not delivered or waiting in the room as promised, the room was barely 2* and we feel completely let down for what was to be a fantastic weekend in the capital city.

The bed wasn't that comfortable, the bathroom was in desperate need of renovation - but I guess thy is why the hotel is in the process of a renovation. My advice to Hilton, Doubletree, and the hotel staff is not to book guests into these rooms that have not yet been renovated - you are not offering a 4* service and are seriously letting your customers down.

On the upside the breakfast was nice and there was a wide selection to enjoy.
