I previously reviewed the Mint after a stay a few months ago, have stayed here a combined 25+ nights so far this year, and left with a positive impression of the property after my previous stays. My most recent stay, however, was nowhere near the standard of previous visits.
Firstly, the hotel is clearly busier than usual and this has made it impossible at peak times to use the internet on the AppleTV. I still commend the hotel for offering free internet and the Apple system - every hotel should do this - but the connection speed is extremely frustrating when the hotel is at capacity. And it seemed to be at capacity during my whole stay, which is not a surprise for London in the Summer. Additionally, my TV/Internet system froze twice during my stay and a technician had to come reboot the system. Fortunately, both times the hotel responded quickly and resolved the matter very quickly.
Second, housekeeping seems to be a complete crapshoot. Upon arriving at the hotel, the housekeeper had left the shower drain on top of the sink. Two days later, I came back to my room at 5pm and it hadn't been cleaned.
The worst part of my experience however was check out, and unfortunately this was over a very trivial issue. I should stress that overall the staff at the hotel are extremely friendly and helpful and this was the exception. However, the guy I got that morning was rude and unprofessional. As I said, the issue was minor - upon check in I was asked whether I wanted a newspaper. I said yes, given it is standard practice in any hotel I've ever stayed at to offer this for free. Upon check out, I was shocked to see a charge for one pound per day for the newspaper. I wasn't charged on previous visits, and so when I raised this issue with the hope that the hotel would waive the 5 pounds charge because of a misunderstanding the front desk guy gave me a dirty look and said "well its too late, I always tell my guests at check in they have to pay for the newspaper". Apparently, absolutely nothing could be done, despite the fact I had in no way received news this was the case, was a frequent customer, and had previous experience that this wasn't hotel policy. Being late for the airport I paid the charge.
Its already frustrating that the hotel has no loyalty program given my frequent visits to London and the use of the property by my company. But the attitude I received at check out this time was the final straw - the hotel has my five pounds for the newspaper, but next time I'm in town for a week for work I'm going to take my 1000 pounds to another property.
