There's nothing much wrong with the food at Hix if you like meaty and earthy although there is a feeling of the production line. We didn't ask for appetizers before the first course but they came anyway because "everyone likes them".
That's a symptom of where this restaurant goes wrong. Attitude. It's busy but so are lots of other restaurants that know how to handle lots of people arriving around 8 pm. In Hix, a snotty desk nazi questions whether you have a booking and then tells most people to join a growing crowd in the entrance lobby.
we were told to get ourselves a drink at the bar in the restaurant. we went over there and a barman who thought he was so chilled he was practicaly narcoleptic, said we couldn't sit at the bar. when we said we'd be sent by his colleague to do exactly that as our 8pm table was not going to be ready till 8.30pm he turned his back and stalked off to the other end of the bar shaking his head.
When we eventually sat down the waiter who was taking our order stood with one hand in his pocket, his hip cocked and his other hand in his belt looking at the (very pretty) girl on our table who was giving her order with an air of condescending hostility.
I won't go back. I'll go somewhere, like the newly opened Balthazar, where the staff smile, make you feel good and behave as if they think you, not they are cool.
