“Hidden gem, a truly wonderful hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2012

This is everything I need in a hotel, and most everything I want. The size of the room is fine, the details upper class. The food is amazing, of course -- it is for many the lure. They checked me in very early the day I arrived, a perk for which I cannot be sufficiently thankful; When you arrive after an overnight flight and need an 8 am check-in, it is a life-saver and they were happy to do it. The staff are friendly and helpful. If this weren't at such a good price, it would be nonetheless praiseworthy, but it is a fine deal this week and I am happy to have found a new go-to place in Central London.

Room Tip: Relax, enjoy it. It's unlikely you will get a room with a view -- the location is not conducive...

There is an incredibly friendly atmosphere at the St. John Hotel and the hotel staff are very welcoming. Rooms are simple but gorgeous and exceptionally clean. They have really maximised the space by putting the bathroom in the same room as the bed (which was very comfortable), only the toilet is in a separate room. There is a great mini bar selection which has a choice high quality and local drinks (Kernel beer and Sipsmith gin and vodka). The restaurant is fabulous, we had lunch there after checking in and then breakfast the next morning and the food was delicious.
Whilst the location is great, especially if you are heading out in the west end, the room is noisy late at night. (We put the radio on the digital TV to take the edge off the outside noise.) So, if you are a light sleeper or want an early night, this hotel isn't for you. If you are out in the west end and need an exquisite bolt hole for the evening it's great.

Room Tip: Stay out late and enjoy the party or bring some earplugs.

St John Hotel is a diamond in the ruff "the ruff been Leiscester square".

Once you have stepped through the door you are transported into serenity. The welcome was warm and the staff were swarve and debonair. The rooms have the St John feel to them with the trademark coat pegs all round the room which my partner and I had great fun using all off these. We had a wonderful nights sleep the bed was so very comfortable I could hardly tear my head from the plump pillows to go for breakfast. The finer touches could be missed, little things like a light in the rail to illuminate you clothes, the well stocked mini bar and the high quality soaps and lotions. No in room tea and coffee but room sevice was 24 hour and the tea is of the best blend made just for St John.

We walked back from a show through the hell which is Leiscester square at night and had a late supper in the restaurant. Food is of the trademark and of course is of the highest standard.
This was also the case for breakfast. I had a black pudding to die for with home made baked beans. The toast was from a loaf of wonderful sourdough bread and I cleared the toast rack. Our stay at St John was a real treat. Easily the best thing in Leiscester square and if you are in the westend a must.

As I write this at 2:30am, listening to the ridiculous street noise below, a few things occur to me:

1) I (my company) is paying 330 euro/night for me to stay here
2) There is absolutely NOTHING unique or special about this hotel that would ever make me return to stay here - nothing that gives it that "this is worth 330 euro" factor
3) The restaurant is fantastic
4) That the restaurant alone is not reason to pay an insane amount in a noisy neighborhood
5) That the hotel can't be bothered to do something as simple as own the fact that they have poor sound insulation and give you a pair of earplugs

Seriously, spend your money elesewhere. This is a dud for the price.

This hotel has some good points and bad points. The good ones start with the fantastic location. You are in the thick of the West End with Theaters and restaurants just out the front door which is fantastic, The staff were really lovely, friendly and helpful, The restaurant downstairs was great and they do room service which is an added bonus, The decor was fun and funky, the room was super clean and the air conditioner worked a treat. My favourite part was the gorgeous white linen. It felt amazing though some of our cushions were taken away after our first night??? There was also complimentary mineral water in the room but no tea and coffee facilities, just a well stocked bar fridge.
We paid 240 pounds for a back room which only had one small window which I was fine about. The receptionist made it clear that there was very little natural light so I knew exactly what I was getting. The front rooms which get all the street noise and have lots of natural light are almost 100 pounds more than the back rooms which I don't think would be worth the money.
The thing that disappointed me most about this hotel was that it was really uncomfortable because the rooms are small. Having the bathroom in the bedroom meant there was no where to put our suitcases. We were constantly bumping into each other and our suitcases which became really frustrating. We also were kept awake at night with people walking around the floor above us. (a quick note that the toilet is behind a closed door so you do get privacy in there)
I think if you want an overnight stay and have very little baggage then this hotel is fine, but if you are an overseas traveler it is not the most suitable hotel for the price. The restaurant however is a must. We ate at one of the St Johns restaurants every day!

Everyone should be able to say No. 1 Leciester Sq is their address at least once in their life, but be realistic: that location is busy, so get your expectation level correct and you'll have a great stay.

Its a great old building, unfortunately dwarfed by the eyesore W hotel. The staff throughout were wonderful: made us feel part of the team, very informal but professional too. The room looked exactly like the images on the website - ask for a higher floor to get more light.

Doors in the room were unusually thick and heavy so internal noise is kept to a minimum but there's no hiding the noise outside. Nor the light, with no black-out blinds.

But really, who cares? This is not a hotel to hide from the world in; you are in a pole position in central london, so live it up.

The rooms are very similar to Soho House Group, but with the green rubber floors, perhaps a little more medical than beach house. Penhaligons bath products and great beds. The mini-bar is full of joys including Sipsmith Gin and Vodka.

The bland bar is a disaster, but we were told plans are a foot to improve that - they should, the bar menu is terrific but we weren't going to eat in what felt like a doctor's waiting room. The restaurant food deserves its reputation. Breakfast was excellent and eclectic (smoked gammon, fried soda bread and poached eggs for me). And if you do eat lunch or dinner there, have the signature Custard Tart. It is out of this world.

Use this as a sexy base to have fun in the west end - but if you want tradition, open fires and armchairs stay away.

I stayed for one night on a business trip. The rooms are stylish and unusual, mostly because of the bath/shower being located in the bedroom, with a seperate toilet room. It has a vaguely beachy feel with clapboard walls, and a strange rubber floor.
All the amenities were fine, and the bed comfortable, but the noise level made it almost impossible to sleep. Yes you are located a couple of mins walk from Leicester square and in Chinatown, but for me the location would not compensate for the noise levels. All of the rooms on each floor are clustered into a little corner, so doors/noise from other rooms is also a problem.
I didn't use the restaurant on this occasion, but the Bar area is very basic and lacking in character or atmosphere.
