“Adequate rooms made better by great staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013 via mobile

Situated 10mins walk from Old Street tube, the thistle is not a bad hotel for someone wanting to wander the streets of London. I would say it is aimed more at the business side of the visiting public with extensive conference facilities.
Rooms could do with some tlc as they look a little tired but are comfortable enough for a night or two. Free wifi, digital tv, tea & coffee are all provided. Trouser press is also hidden away in the wardrobe.
The food in the restaurant is actually very good and took me by surprise, the prices aren't cheap but aren't too dissimilar to what you would expect to pay in London.
A small bar area serves till late...good selection of spirits !!
Breakfast was disappointing considering the evening meal. Staff were attentive enough but the hot offering looked like he bedrooms- slightly tired and in need of refreshing.
They do offer car parking. This is chargeable and is very limited( about 15 spaces maximum). It cannot be reserved so if you miss out you will need to park on the adjoining streets which is time restricted and chargeable.

Given its location, it is surprisingly quiet and so a good night was had. I would return here but only if I was on foot/ tube.

This hotel was excellent for what we wanted. Staff were polite and cheerful when we arrived and the room was just great. Very clean. It was close to the Barbican and a pleasant walk from Paddington Station.

Only a short stay, to take in a concert, but had the time to look into the British Museum, and a short walk through Hyde Park and Regents Park. Both very excellent

Just stayed over night for a weeekend away in london. Decided to stay here as other half has stayed before and a lot cheaper than other london hotels. It's not in the centre of the west end but if you know your way round the tube system it only takes 15 minutes to get there. We found the staff very friendly and helpful at checkin. We checked in at 11am and room wasn't ready so were given the choice to come back later or for £10 upgrade and room was already ready. We took the upgrade as had tickets for a show and had planned to be out and about all day and wanted to know we didnt need to worry about checking in late at night. The room was lovely, big and very clean with plenty of tea making facilities. The room was warm and bed very big, so got a good nights sleep. We didn't eat or use the swimming pool or gym at the hotel as we were only there to sleep. Would stay here again as for the money it was a nice hotel and a good price only a short tube ride away from covent garden and everything else.

Big hotel (around 400 rooms) about 5 minutes walk from Old Street tube - two stops from Kings Cross. You can walk to Barbican, but it takes about 15 minutes. Ideal for exploring Shoreditch and Brick Lane areas.

The hotel has quite a smart entrance/lobby area but many of the other common areas are looking a little dated. We upgraded to a premium room at the reception because there weren't any double rooms available, the cost was £10 per night - a little bit less than it would have been on booking.com

Room is fine, although the first time I've ever had a complaint about a pillow (I'm usually a fairly easy guest to please!). Comfortable and affordable. For this price in London, it's one of the best deals in town.

Pool was busy with families and children, and not one you can use to do lengths/laps. But there's a sauna and a steam room and also a gym that I didn't use. Again, for this price it's impressive to see those facilities.

Room Tip: Premium double costs an extra £10 per night when you check in.

The hotel was a little out of the way but had a pleasant rception area, staff were very welcoming and attentive, one of the lifts was out of order for upgrading? so there was a bit of a wait for people on hgher floors. Our room was a little bit small to say it was a double room, it would be more suited to a single occupant. The use of the leisure centre was definitly a bonus and the food was excellent in the restaurant.
It's about a fifteen minute walk to the nearest tube station (Old Street) for the Northern Line or about ten pounds taxi ride to Kings Cross Station.
This is being picky really, the overall stay was very good, we stayed two nights and enjoyed both of them, we would recommend this hotel to anyone, but I would have liked it to be a bit closer to the centre.

Room Tip: I think higher floors are better rooms?

For the money there are far better places to stay and almost all of the budget chains offer better accommodation. The rooms are very small. On the plus side the shower was good and the rooms were clean.
