“Just passing by”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013

This is a square parade ground just behind Whitehall on the edge of the park. The classical white buildings are worth seeing from this side but you only really want to go if you are passing. The Trooping of the Colour is held here - for the Queen's official birthday - but you are unlikely to see it in person. Apart from that, the most action it has seen recently was the Beach Volleyball at the London 2012 Olympics.

“Closest you will get to guards”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013

At 11am each morning there is a formal changing of the horse guards. Pretty cool to watch.

Even if you don't make it at 11am, check it out. I spent about 30 minutes walking around. This is one of the places where you can get right next to a royal guard and take one of those awkward pictures or try to make them laugh.

A quick visit is all that is needed on your way to Westminster, Parliament or Trafalgar Square.

“Often Missed by Tourists”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

We discovered the changing of the guard at Horse Guards Parade years ago and always try to go when we visit London. The changing of the guard takes place at 1100 Monday-Saturday and 1000 on Sundays. The troops look so sharp in their uniforms, with all metal brightly shined, sitting atop their black horses. The whole ceremony takes about 30 minutes. We have often walked over to Buckingham Palace to see the changing of the guard after this ceremony concludes.

The Queen's birthday celebration, Trooping the Colour, is held here in June. You can put your name in a lottery for a ticket. We were able to get tickets to the dress rehearsal - The Colonel's Review - a few years ago. We had tickets in the front center section of the stands and it was fabulous. The royals were the only "thing" missing from the rehearsal!

The daily changing of the guard isn't as crowded as the one at Buckingham Palace, and if you like horses you will enjoy this. You can have your picture taken with the guards, on their horses, as they stand watch in their sentry boxes.

“Stunning uniforms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013

We had the opportunity to go through the gates as there wa something going on, though I got the impression that the gates are open often. The troopers were extremely smart and well turned out, there was even a Napoleonic era cavalryman present in an excellent representation of whichever regiment it was. Nice and clean, worht a look in.
