Having stayed in Equity Point’s sister hostel in Barcelona some years ago with friends, I was hopeful about the London branch and wasn’t disappointed.
The Hostels location near by London’s legendary Paddington station, could be a little out of the way for some visits – however the neighbourhood more than makes up for a little extra time spent on the tube or buses. A pleasant tree lined row of Georgian houses.
Inside Equity Point it’s owners have obviously spent time cultivating it’s modern multicoloured interior. The tube map like colour scheme, and fiber-optic signage might not be to everyone’s cup of tea, but you have to give them the points for effort.
The bedrooms are better equipped and thought out than many more expensive hotel rooms I’ve stayed in. The eight-bed room I stayed in had reading lights and electrical sockets dedicated to each bed (both tops and bottom bunks) and it’s own en-suite all in pleasingly perfect working order.
So that’ll also keep the target market happily tapping on laptops and other electricity gobbling gadgets as long as they feel the need to better explore London’s sights via Google map.
Unfortunately Equity Point do however feel the need to extort an extra few pounds from gadget hungry guests pockets. The wifi provided throughout the hostel is charged at an additional cost.
As the front desk sign featuring the costs per day/hour declares: “I am not included”. The generally friendly front desk staff grimace momentarily when regularly asked to repeat their signs plea: “it’s not included”.
Similarly disappointing is the lack of any cooking facilities available.
Everything about the hostel is clearly the work of an organisation who know what they’re trying to do, and they do it well. The HostelBookers award the group have earned is well deserved.
The only draw back to the Equity Point becoming quite so good at what they do is that it occasionally feels slightly clinical, and results in a general lack of any atmosphere around the hostel. But for many that will be a small trade for efficiency.
Staff are polite certainly, but come across a little disinterested. The breakfast is a standard, if busy affair, as are check in and check-out, however it tends to feel a little like everybody is simply trying to make their way as quickly and effectively as they can to somewhere else. Perhaps that explains the tube themed décor.
A well put together hostel, with nearly all the rights parts (just not the kitchen sink) all it really needs is a little more heart.
