One cannot help but be slightly disappointed with the National's latest offering. Of course it's hard for them to follow performances like War Horse, and going further back His Dark Materials. On reflection I think it is down to the choice of text, although having read War Horse could you predict that it would be so successful?
The set was brilliant and the acting great and it is well worth going, especially if you can get tickets for a reasonable as opposed to extortionate amount. But don't get your hopes up too high. If you have children read the book first, although perhaps save the end for after the show so as not to spoil it. There are some lovely touches but at times I thought it would be better suited to a school end of year show. I didn't like the way they had updated some if the language, although that is a minor criticism, as I think it is a text of it's time. The evocation of 1920s Berlin was probably its strongest part. They have also made it more balanced with girls featuring more than in the book. I would be interested to see what others make of it, it is only previewing currently.
