This show is now at the Savoy Theatre. A friend of mine booked tickets for Let it Be several weeks out, and if I had been picking the show this would not have been one I would have personally selected just based on my biases. Fortunately for me, she picked the show because it far exceeded my expectations.
Yeah I liked the Beatles previously--a little bit. And yes, I know they are generally considered one of if not the best band of all time. But I guess I didn't really appreciate what they meant to music until hearing song after song back to back, live.
The group of musicians in the show are simply fantastic. Their version of The Long and Winding Road was absolutely incredible--simple and wonderful chord corrections, crystal clear lyrics, and no orchestra in the background--how Paul McCartney now performs it live. I heard others make the same comments, that they like this version better than the original on the album.
While I did read some negative commentary regarding the fact that this is just back to back music and no story line, while that is true, I didn't see how it really was a negative. The music was great, costuming excellent, a little bit of commentary about their history mostly in the form of information projected on the screens. At the end, I found myself hoping that the band would play one more song because they really were that good, and if there had been a dialogue or lots of efforts to make it a true "musical" it would have probably annoyed me.
So tribute concert, maybe. But worth it, for sure.
