“Best London gallery for classical art”

Caravaggio exhibition, standing exhibitions of high quality; specials of international standard. Good loos, wide selection of art - much of it free (specials are often chraged for but around £7 for seniors).

“Easy on the eye”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

There's always something interesting to see with regular special exhibitions. It's an intimate space so easy to get around. The free areas are worth it with some familiar faces and interesting art. 3rd floor restaurant and bar not bad

“Not to be Missed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2013

Absolutely fantastic collection of portraits, literally telling the story of the United Kingdom through the faces of thousands of people. Some are royalty and posed, others are sketches of ordinary individuals - while still others might be candid photos! It's wonderful to see the progression in the artistic style alongside the changes in the fashion and composition.

“Fascinating - the history of Britain in pictures”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2013

Had another wonderful day, trying to catch the bits I missed last time and reprising some of the ones I did last time!

Stuarts and regency period this time, and a quick trot around the contemporary gallery, some amazing portraits there. Loved some of the self portraits, although not so keen on the abstract portraits, not sure the sitters would have been particularly flattered either but a good subject for discussion.

Attended a very interesting presentation on Shakespeare by his portrait. Thoroughly enjoyable day, no time for the special exhibitions, so another reason to return, in addition to the Victorians, that I didn't have time for this visit.

“Extraordinary Gallery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013 via mobile

What an impressive presentation of the history of the United Kingdom.
As you walk into the first gallery you are just blown away by the vivid portraits of the earliest kings. As you move from room to room you are overwhelmed by the grandeur of the people who perpetuated the royal system for a thousand years.
Many of the names are familiar if you have ever studied English history, but even the portraits of those that you don't know reveal much about the era, the society and the culture of this nation.
Don't miss this gallery.
