“For an hour or a day...Just go!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2013

First off, the National Gallery is free. Well, they request a 4 pound donation (honor system) and a map of the gallery is 1 pound. So money - or lack thereof - is not an issue regarding admission.

The National Gallery essentially groups paintings together by century so if you only have a limited amount of time to spend, you can fairly easily navigate this huge museum to view artists or works in which you have the most interest.

I attended a free one hour tour in which the docent gave us a mini-art history lesson on 3 different paintings. Audi guides are also available for rental.

The National Gallery prohibits ALL photography which includes cell phones, cameras with or without flash, you name it. No photography, period! Personally, I find this policy refreshing after experiencing the exact opposite at the British Museum. Here, people can take the time to look at paintings, the ceilings, and enjoy the surroundings without being blinded by flashes or having their experience ruined by unending groups of people posing in front of every major piece of art.

I did not eat at the National Dining rooms or The National Cafe but both venues looked quite inviting.

With its location off Trafalgar Square, this should definitely be on the must see list for any visitor to London

“disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2013

sorry I find art museum such as this one very boring: paintings, paintings, paintings.... and it's all. Quite boring stuff. Never again!

“Great collection of art”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2013

Visited National Gallery in March 2013: there is an amazing collection of masterpieces including some world-renown paintings. It was great to wonder from gallery to gallery looking at the paintings; each display room (and there are several!) has a seating area where if you want to you can sit down and rest and admire the artwork.

Admission is free; they do charge for guides, but the cost was reasonable (£1 for basic plan) in this context. It is the sort of place you can spend all day or just drop in and do a room or two.

The thing that did let our visit down was a cafe: we had a hot-chocolate and latte coffee. The hot-chocoloate was not that great and the latte was average; that said the cafe was a nice place to sit.
