I've just returned from a fantastic theatre-weekend in London which I had booked as a surprise 60th birthday treat for my Sister.
I contacted the hotel via email in advance of our stay advising them of the special occasion and from the second I was contacted by the hotel (Steffan and Kriti), I knew that we were in safe hands and the weekend could not have been more perfect.
There are so many plus points about this hotel, I really could go on for ages, but for me the hightlights are:-
The Rooms:
Beautifully furnished and spotlessly clean. The fresh flowers are a nice touch as too is the Nespresso machine. The bed linen and pillows are SO luxurious, my sister described it a sleeping in a 'giant marshmellow' (that's a good thing!). We were fortunate to be upgraded to a deluxe suite on the 5th floor with a fabulous view over Waterloo Bridge, but I won't have any hesitation in booking an Aldwych/Executive room when I go back as all the rooms look lovely and have the same quality of furnishing.
The Staff:
We were greeted on Reception by Becky who was absolutely charming (our luggage by the way was whisked off as soon as we walked in the door) and after an extremely smooth and quick check in, she gave us a quick tour of the facilities before taking us to our room. She really made my Sister feel special as did all the staff we spoke to during our stay.
Although we didn't manage to catch everyone's names, all of the staff are so friendly (but professional) and at no point during our stay were we made to feel uncomfortable or as if we didn't belong there (as I have been made to feel in some other 5 star establishments).
Afternoon Tea:
As an additional treat, I had pre-booked Champagne Afternoon Tea at a very reasonable cost of £35/pp. If you get the chance, you must try it. The mini scones and homemade lemon curd are a taste sensation!! The atmosphere in the lobby bar/lounge was just right - chatty but not too loud and the tables are nicely spaced so that you could have a propper conversation. When the tea-lights were put out at about 16.30, it made the space even more intimate and charming.
Champagne Coctails:
The Strawberry and vanilla and Blueberry and lemongrass coctails are DELICIOUS!!! The hotel has an extensive coctail list but as it was a celebration, the lure of the champagne was way too tempting.
Nice touches:
In addition to the upgraded room, the Chef had iced 'Happy Birthday' on the cake stand when we had our afternoon tea and when we returned to our Suite, there was another piece of chocolate cake and a bottle of champagne waiting for us - complimentary - with 'Happy Birthday' iced on the plate. It is things like this that set this hotel apart from others, you can tell they genuinely care about their customers and want to make their stay as enjoyable as possible.
I had originally booked the Mayfair, but changed to One Aldwych about one month prior to our stay due to reviews on Trip Advisor and I am so glad that I did. My sister has said it was the best weekend she has EVER had, which is great accolade given she is now 60.
Thank you One Aldwych, I am already looking to come back next year with my husband..... for a romantic trip this time.
