“Do some research in advance”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2013

I have always wanted to visit the V&A and we finally got around to it last Saturday. It is quite an amazing place. It is packed full of interest - too much to take in over the space of a few hours. Next time I visit I will do my research first and concentrate on a particular field. Or better still, I will book a guided tour than follow up the particular areas that excite my curiosity. The building itself is architecturally beautiful both inside and out - the room currently containing the Raphael exhibits is stunning.
The cafe/restaurant was busy but there is adequate seating available. We had a snack that was certainly satisfactory. There were a lot of people there and Saturday must be a busy day for visiting; I guess that in the summer it could be overwhelming.

“A great example of Victorian architecture, housing a fascinating collection”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2013

It is best to avoid school holidays and weekends if possible. The building itself is lovely and impressive. You are greeted by a breathtaking Chihuly glass sculpture hanging from the ceiling. There is everything from china and furniture to clothing on display and the extensive shop is like an exhibition of modern design and crafts in itself.

“A great museum for sophisticated grown-ups.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2013

This is absolutely the place to see anything design-related in depth. Abyss-level depth. Don't expect Da Vinci--that's with the school groups at the National Gallery (art lovers shouldn't miss that). But you will have your breath taken away by the comprehensive display of ceramics from bronze-age to now. And by fabric and weaving and glass and paper and sculpture and silver and costumes and....

The stuff is fabulous, but the exposition isn't. It's sometimes hard to figure out which label is referring to which object. And it's occasionally frustrating to see mind-blowing things with no interpretive help.

Don't bring the kids. They'd be bored in minutes.

“Often Overlooked.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013

The Natural History Museum and The Science Museum pull in the crowds, but this museum must be on your "visit" list. A lot of varied exhibits on display that will fascinate a lot of people and you have time to relish what you see whether it be precious stones, paintings, statues, costumes and much much more.

“Breathtaking.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013

We love the museums all over the country, but, as our children are normally our weather vane, we had never been to the V&A before.

As we were just off on our own, we went along and spent the better part of the day there.

It's just lovely. I adored the theatre section, and am dying to return when the reconstruction of the arched courtyard is finished.

Even the cafe was special, and we gawped at the beautiful tiles in there whilst we drank our tea.
