“Very Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2013

We are staying at the beautiful Grosvenor House, JW Marriott. On our last visit we dined at the JW Steakhouse and were looking forward to dining there again last evening. The restaurant was very busy but we did get a reservation for a later seating. Service ok but not impressive. My husband specifically inquired about the lamb chops before ordering. They were highly recommended by our server but unfortunately they were very tough and excessively fatty. I ordered a NY strip medium rare and it arrived well done. While they were quick to offer a newly prepared steak but they did say it would be 15 minutes....so now we are longer dining together....

The next steak arrived and although not overcooked this time, was also a disappointment as it lhad no flavour, had a crumbly texture and was extremely dry. I ate a few bites of it and decided to settle for the side dishes but basically went home hungry. No one ever came back to our table to check on us until we flagged someone down for the bill. They offered a dessert in compensation for the steak but we declined. In the end they comped us two glasses of wine but didn't visit our table again.

An expensive steakhouse that cannot cook a steak to temperature is in my opinion a FAIL. Also serving a guest an expensive steak and ordering them to cut it through as soon as it is set in front of them is also a FAIL....I guess they do this so they won't have to return to the table. We did not want to be comped wine or dessert ( or steak for that matter). What we wanted was an enjoyable dining experience for which we were happy to pay.

“Noisy, expensive - but a great steak”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2013

Had dinner here with a friend I hadn't seen for a long time. A cold Tuesday evening, but the place was pretty full. The acoustics of the room were lousy and it was difficult to have a proper conversation. I think this is called "buzzing" in restaurant-speak. The other bummer was the wine list. I'd looked at it on-line beforehand and thought it expensive - not very much under £50. I checked at random an Argentinian red (vintage 2010) that was on the list for £57, and found that it could be bought in an off-licence for £12.50. That's a mark-up of over 450%.- for a three year old wine that hasn't exactly needed decades of patient cellaring. Ridiculous. We had a bottle of house red for £29. It was delicious.

But the meat - really good. We had a 32 oz Tomahawk - a monster of a steak, perfectly cooked medium-rare, with excellent chips, onion rings and creamed spinach. That actually wasn't that dear at £22 each + sides. Nice service too.

So, go. Bring a hearing-aid and drink the house red. And have an unimprovable steak.

“Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2013

I went with my family yesterday evening to JW Steakhouse to celebrate my brother-in-laws 50th Birthday and the evening was excellent thanks to the very attentive and professional staff. Especially Giovanni who recommended what we should eat, and what starters we should share etc. The Starters, Main Course and Desserts were amazing will definitely go back. We were given a free bottle of Bubbly, and a cheese cake made into a birthday cake together with a lovely Birthday card signed by all the staff, a very nice touch to end the evening. The drinks and cocktails were lovely. Will definitely go back soon cant wait.
