Description: Lovers of Ethiopian cuisine and adventurous foodies will appreciate this bright, clean and modern restaurant in Camberwell that prides itself on its family recipes and dedication to authentic Ethiopian traditions. Zeret itself is a name that comes from a small village in northern Ethiopia, and the menu includes mostly chicken, lamb and beef stews made with butter, garlic and ginger served on pancake-like flatbread called enjera. All the food here is delicious, and the dining room is decorated with colourful placemats, potted palms and simple white walls. Perfect for communal/sharing meals with friends and family, the Zeret Kitchen has attentive staff and a relaxed atmosphere don't miss the Ethiopian style chicken cooked with green chillies, herbs and spices.

“Great value and something a bit different”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2013

I had never had Ethiopian food before going to Zeret and it was a very good introduction. I ordered the vegetarian selection which came with the flatbread injera which was tasty and an interesting new flavour! Portions were very generous and extremely reasonably priced at only £7.50.

The owners were welcoming and I would certainly recommend trying this out. It was an unexpected gem in Camberwell.

“Delicious and good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

Although in an unpromising location (to say the least), inside the restaurant the atmosphere is lovely. It is apparent that most of the customers are regulars.

The food is lovely, and unusual in that you are served a flatbread with a number of different meat and vegetable dishes to top it. You mop up the different dishes with pieces of the bread. Everything was freshly prepared and tasty. The style of food is refreshingly different with a lot of sour flavours.

Service is warm and helpful.

Pricewise, our meal including drinks came to less than £30, so exceptionally good value.

“A Fantastic Restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

Definitely the best Ethiopian food in London, and one of the nicest places I've ever had a meal - anywhere.
The small parade of shops on Camberwell Road where the restaurant is located is a bit stark and utilitarian, not where you'd necessarily think you'd find a really homely, friendly place to eat, but once you are inside the owners and staff make you feel like family. We weren't the only people there, but the owner certainly made us feel as if we were.
The decor is nice - Ethiopian touches, without being overly touristy or tacky.
The food is really good - spicy, aromatic and served on injera. Plenty of variety on the menu, but, as it was our first time at Zeret we had a sample platter. This turned out to be a great choice, as we ended up trying about 7 or 8 different dishes of lamb, chicken, beef and vegetables (the misir wot - lentils - is very good, and the kitfo -beef - is stunning, but very spicy).
I honestly can't recommend this restaurant highly enough - we had a fantastic evening. Whether you want to try something new, or you know Ethiopian food and want to eat at a place they do it well, Zeret should be the first place you go in London.

“Well worth a return trip to Camberwell”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2013

Our daughter had heard good reports of Zeret and it more than lived up to them. We might have been a nuisance ordering lunch, or possibly dinner, at 5pm but couldn't have felt more welcome. Every item in the Zeret Surprise and the vegetarian selection was delicious. We enjoyed eating with our fingers and with practice might be less messy. The teas and St George's beer went really well with the food. It's a shame we were pushed for time, as the coffee ceremony sounded intriguing. Zeret must be south London's finest. Any chance of its relocating to Oxford?

“A reason to go to Camberwell!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2013 via mobile

Brilliant food and service - could not have been better looked after! Very homely and so glad we made the trip! Loved our big pancake and the Ethiopian chicken was our favourite dish. We asked the waitress to put together a selection of dishes for us as we weren't familiar with the cuisine- very glad we did- everything was delicious! We asked for spicy but it wasn't crazy hot, so don't be scared.
