“Simply a wonderful experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

Excellent value for the money. What sets this hotel apart is the staff, who will go to great lengths to please you and treat you as a valued client. As I was on business for several days, I received an upgrade. The room was cleaned perfectly everyday by very kind staff. I personally love the diversity of the neighborhood, which is very family oriented. Yeah for the parking! My friends could actually come pick me up at night and we could have a drink at the lovely bar first.

So lovely to get out of heaps of tourists in the city center and "retrieve" in a quiet hotel. I truly enjoyed the spacious studio and the all the amenities: kitchenette, bathtub and washing machine all in the room. Nice linen in the bed, slept very well. 2 small glitches though: the swimming pool which indeed looked nice on the pictures was closed for repair and should have been opened on my last day, but it wasn't. Learn only afterwards that one only can collect miles for the stay at this hotel if it is booked via: http://www.designhotels.com/

Put it together: very recommended.

Dear Guest
Thank you for taking the time to write a review on Tripadvisor. We are glad to read that you enjoyed the quietness of the hotel and the characteristics of your “spacious studio”, these and to be “out of the heaps” are some of the criteria that make our hotel so popular. I am sorry to see that you did not have the chance to use the swimming pool in this occasion, we had an unexpected maintenance repair, which compelled us to put off the reopening day, please accept my sincere apologies for this. Now everything is back to normal and we are looking forward to host you again so you can enjoy it to the full. Many thanks and kind regards, Sandro Desole

You simply won't find a better hotel experience for the money in London. The former town hall built in 1910 and converted into a hotel with a '1930's art deco' style exceeded my expectations. The rooms are large and unique with extremely comfortable beds. I've stayed at several London hotels and still' cant get over the size of the rooms. Reminds me more of a studio apartment. There is also had a small kitchen in the room with an espresso machine and a small fridge. Another cool amenity - the town hall tea lady with a trolley of martinis who strolls the hotel later in the afternoon - nice touch. The hotel is close (less than 5 min walk) to the Bethnal Green tube station (Central Line). They also have a shuttle to Canary Wharf which is a convenient alternative to public transport. The food was excellent (dinner) - pleasantly surprised with the cuisine - both the quality and the presentation. Overall, a great hotel in a great city.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for sharing your thorough feedback on TripAdvisor, highlighting how much you loved our hotel and its history. It is nice to read that our room size, “the extremely comfortable beds” , the room amenities and “the Tea Lady” made your stay unique. We are also glad to know that all our services were to your satisfaction and are indeed part and parcel of the experience of the THH. The restaurant with is unique culinary creations is once again the final touch of a “one of a kind” stay. We are looking forward to your next visit to THH.

I recently stayed in the uber stylish Town Hall in Bethnal Green. Great re use of building. Very comfortable rooms. Was a bit disappointed in lack of communal social spaces, and hotel bar is small. That said the rooms are large and very comfortable. Would recommend if staying for a few days. Only 15 min east of Oxford circus and on central line.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for sharing your comments on TripAdvisor. It is a pleasure to read that you loved the refurbishment operated on the listed building and that the choice of our bedding has been the right one to give our guest the well deserved rest. We read about the communal space and are working on this so that next time you can have a space for you and your friends.

ROOMS: What can I say that isn’t perfect about the Town Hall Hotel. We stayed in a One Bedroom apartment style room for 5 nights, and then again for 1 night a few days later (different room this time, just a standard small room).
The one bedroom apartment (room 309) is absolutely beautifully large. The entire place is more of a self contained apartment which has a kitchen, lounge room, dishwasher, clothes washer/dryer, and large, excellent bathroom. The room is beautifully fitted, with all the modern features you would expect from any new hotel. We found the space to be fantastic, especially given its location. The room is perfectly clean, with an excellent turndown service offering my girlfriend 2 Macaroons for her to indulge in every night! There is a small fridge with both sparkling and still water complimentary, as well as free wifi internet throughout the hotel. The room has its own coffee machine, tea etc, and we enjoyed using the kitchen to prepare snacks and dinner acquired from the Borough food market.
SERVICE and AMENITIES: The service was fantastic throughout. On check in on the 27th of February, our female check in staff member was above and beyond pleasant, with fantastic rapport. We were even more impressed with her personal attendance to our room to give us some shopping vouchers etc only minutes after we had arrived. She is definitely the type of staff member who makes a hotel fantastic. The hotel also has a gym and swimming pool. The gym is small, with 2 treadmills, and a dumbell rack and some basic resistance machines. It is very clean, and perfectly adequate for daily use. There are towels there to use, and I liked the sterility of the disinfectant wipes that you use after you use the equipment. The pool looks awesome but we didn't use it.
FOOD: Breakfast in the corner room was included in our 5 day stay, and then not included in our subsequent one night stay. The breakfast was great, with the European selection of croissants, cold meats, swiss cheese and coffee/tea etc. The highlight is the hot food menu (extra approx 4.50 GBP) you can order on top of your included buffet breakfast. I had the bacon which you must try when you are there. I am used to flat greasy bacon, but this was a large chunk, more like a pork belly then bacon and the entire was delicious.
We had dinner at Viajante for my birthday - a 12 course degustation of fantastically prepared food. We were situated right in front of the kitchen which allowed my food obsessed girlfriend (who chose it because of its 1 Michelin star rating) to watch every strand of vegetable get cut, and ever spoonful of sauce prepared. The service was fantastic, with the highlight being Edwardo, our waiter who had a fantastic balance of knowledge, attentiveness and professionalism - he truly made the dinner enjoyable. Now I am not a person to enjoy degustations, in fact, I am completely the opposite. I usually hate the pomp and circumstance of 12 dishes of tiny food displayed on large plates, which are often so tasty because you have waited so long just to be able to eat the pea which has been sliced in two with a grain of hand picked mid ocean sea salt from open waters within the Bermuda Triangle. But this meal surprised me and was FANTASTIC. Each dish was of good proportions, and the meal only officially started after maybe ?5 appetisers which were unique and "appetising". I had the wine pairing which was terrific. Obviously nothing in this realm of eating is good value per se, but this meal is by far the best degustation meal I have ever had. It has brought me faith into eating Degustations (Also in my top list of degustations is Blu restaurant at the top of the Shangri La in Singapore).
LOCATION: The location was great for us. It is about 400m from the Bethnal Green station which takes you most places on the Central Tube line. Lots of buses take you around the east side, such as around Shoreditch (apparently the funky cool area of East London). We purchased a 7 day unlimited pass for about GBP30 and moved easily wherever we needed to go. Tubes in London are really good, despite a few shut downs. If you need to get a tube pass, and you're there longer than 3-4 days and think you'll be using the tube as your main mode, then the 7 day pass is well worth it. Budget for about 8-12 pounds per day if you are using it to do all your sight seeing and do the pay as you go rather than a pass.
OVERALL: Highly recommended. One of the best hotels we’ve stayed in, for both ambience, facilities, location and price. It is good value to pre-book/pay a package. Not so cheap when paying for a room on short notice, which we found for our return for 1 night (as we enjoyed our stay there so much). However, no matter whether or not you get the large 1 bedroom apartment or the smallest room they have available, the feel, and experience of the place is fantastic. You will not be disappointed with any room there. (For information - we paid less for our pre-booked 1 bedroom apartment per night than our short notice double room and the difference in size is significant). Well done town hall hotel. We will be back.

Dear Guest,
we cannot but appreciate your extensive comment and your thorough description of our facility. It is nice to read that you and your family had a nice stay with us throughout all your stay. We are glad that you enjoyed the gym, the “beautifully large 309” with all its amenities and the fine dining experience at the Viajante. You really captured the essence of our philosophy of hospitality, to give our guest his “home far away from home”. Rest assured that we will pass on your compliments to the “female member of the staff” which welcomed you so well. Please make sure to come back soon and let me know in advance so I can offer you my assistance.

Pretty trendy, recently renovated offering very good rooms and good hotel amenities. Very unique location considering it is a former Town Hall (hence the name), it even retains the chambers where to council met for meetings (I presume).

The bar and restaurant were also very good, along with the pool, pretty cool. The decor is also very interesting, with retro and art deco themes through out the hotel creating a very cozy atmosphere.

The location is not stellar, however it is very close to the Underground so it is very easy to get around London on the Central Line.

Dear Guest,
We are really glad to read that you enjoyed your stay with us. The all idea of our hotel is to be welcoming and to make our dear guests feel at home with a unique touch whether they are staying for business or leisure, long or short periods. This is the reason why our rooms are very spacious and even staying inside the hotel, as you well remarked, you can still enjoy many activities, eat very good food and walk around looking at our many art pieces dislocated all around the building. Please make sure next time you come to have one of our tours around. As per the location, this is an upcoming area with a lot of galleries, artists and quirky restaurants. Our concierge desk will be more than glad next time to point you quite a few good locations around to enjoy your East End stay even more. Kind Regards Sandro Desole
