My wife and I went with our family for our Chinese daughter in law's birthday - at her suggestion.
The place was almost empty when we arrived and no atmosphere, but that soon changed as more diners arrived; these include a number of Chinese and other Asians, which we thought an encouraging sign.
There were five in our party; three of us ordered the set 'Ping Pong Selection' at £9.95, as it seemed a good variety of dim sum, spring rolls and other items for the price. The other two, including our d-i-l went a la carte with soup to start and a variety of dim sum, spring rolls etc followed by Won Ton soup to cleanse the palate (Chinese style). My wife and I had chrysanthemum tea, which we had tasted and enjoyed in China. The service was not the fastest, but I have had far worse. The dim sum were as we had in China, as were the other offerings. Certain reviews complain that the dim sum were bland, which they are and that is why you eat them dipped in Soy Sauce and the saltiness brings out the flavour; ditto with the Hoisin Sauce on spring rolls. There is also the difference in taste in the age-old battle between Mandarin and Cantonese cooking style, which also divides the Western taste buds. In fact the food was good, tasty, as we ate it, and filling. Our daughter in law said that the majority of items were better than Chinatown although a few were not. She also said that the dim sum were expensive, but she is used to buying from Chinese supermarkets where boxes of 20 spring rolls, for example, cost not a lot more than a couple of helpings of dim sum at Ping Pong. However, my wife and I considered the set menu good value for money. especially looking at the a la carte.
Our only disappointment was the dessert 'special' of mango pudding, which was very plain and not much flavour of mango. I was going for the frozen berries and hot white chocolate sauce that sounded delicious, but being a cold night I considered the puding more warming - unfortunately.
All round it was a good evening, no doubt greatly improved by the company.
