Time was fairly tight. We had been with friends to see Chariots of Fire at the Gielgud Theatre (reviewed separately) and needed a suitable dinner venue close to the Underground Piccadilly line so that my wife and I could reach Kings Cross station comfortably for our return home. Other reasons for selecting the Hampshire were the good reputation of Radisson Blu and the fact that I am a member of the Gourmet Society (GS). Most unusually for a Saturday evening in central London, the Hampshire offered 25 percent off the TOTAL bill for GS members. To help the restaurant give us speedy service we took the time beforehand to download their menu and all placed our orders ahead. Another unusual thing to do, perhaps, but it worked very well. To be on the safe side I took a print-out of the email with me and gave it to the waitress on arrival. Worked wonderfully: helped them and us. Despite the schedule we felt at ease and comfortable throughout, and even if we had not benefited from the substantial GS reduction, it still would have been a very good value meal - actually amazingly good value. The venue is smart and stylish, service was really impeccable, food was glorious - including as a dessert, frozen whisky cream with prunes and Earl Grey syrup. And now, courtesy of the chef, I know how to make it!!! If there is any criticism at all it would be that the white wine should have been colder before the ice bucket treatment and the plates could have been hotter. I like them hot, not just warm. But in all other respects, absolutely recommended. We shall certainly return and look forward to doing so.
