“good for the price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2012

A very basic small room (woodchip wallpaper, magnolia), tiny ensuite and small towel. (so no privacy if staying with a friend!) No kettle in room. BUT warm, comfortable bed, quiet. Excellent staff warm, friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good- lots of options to cater for all tastes. I like a cup of tea when I wake up- this was what was missing. Would def stay again as a stop over- good value for the price- I would recommend Charlies

We stayed here for one night on a freezing cold December night. The room was icy at first, but once the heating kicked in it warmed up very nicely and stayed warm right through the night.
Tiny single room, but I only wanted to sleep there, so it was perfectly adequate. Bed was comfortable, slept really well.
A very good location. Five minutes to the nearest tube station and then about 20 minutes to the centre of London.
All in all a really good place to stay.
The only downside, and it had absolutely nothing to do with the hotel, was that my visit coincided with a meeting of the National Convention of Door Slammers. It turns out that it was a hen party. Closing a door quietly was not an option as they ran from room to room. It was bad enough at 5.30pm, but even worse at 3.45 in the morning! It took them a good half hour to calm down, but then it was peace and tranquility for the rest of the night. I only hope that my racous snoring stopped them from getting to sleep for a while!
Breakfast was reasonable. A choice of Bacon, beans, and either fried or scrambled eggs. Nothing spectacular, very builders caff, but tasty. The toast was good! Sliced white, but good and thick and arrived very hot.
For a good cheap stay in London, I would definitely recommend Charlies.

Room Tip: If there's a hen party, leave the premises!

Charlie's has a good location and within easy reach of Tufnell Park tube. The staff are very friendly and the room, bed, sheets, towels were great. The down side was the shower head!! There was some damp/gung on it, attatched to the wall too so I couldn't get it down and clean it. Breakfast was alright but there were not enough tables so I was sat with people talking a completley different language. The bedroom I was in was huge and had a nice sash windown, downfall was the partitioned wall... I could hear everything the guy next door was saying on the phone however I had a quiet night.

Greeted at the door by a 90+ year old man, who looked like he hadn't changed his clothes for 60 of them and growled at us.
Rooms were tiny, bedsheets were clean, beds uncomfy, found toenails in the draw next to the bed.
The bathroom was so small you had to leave the door open to use it. The toilet leaked into a strategically placed plughole.
I could not tell you enough to avoid this place.
If your really desperate, sleep on the street not here.

We have stayed in numerous hotels, B&Bs and hostels all over the world from 1* to 5* but this was poor. Only stayed for 1 night during olympics with a very late check in and were allocated a basement room. The room absolutely stank.... being on the ground floor with the windows left open all day (to remove the smell???) one can only assume that a cat or 2 have been coming in and spraying in the corner by the door. Either this or the toilet has been leaking into the carpet and never cleaned. The bathroom (which you could only fit in if your slender) was in serious need or restotation, with mold and tiling coming off. Couldn't wait to leave the room in the morning.

On the positive side, at the least the bed sheets were clean and the home cooked breakfast set us up for the day.

Room Tip: Avoid basement rooms if possible, especially #8, maybe others are better?
