“Excellent Japanese in the City”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013 via mobile

This was recommended to me by a colleague and I wasn't disappointed. We hadn't booked but snagged the last free table. Food is excellent and plentiful.
Service was good initially but got slower as the place filled up.

“Real Japanese”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2013

We stumbled onto Mugen at the end of a long tiring day - a real find. My wife is Japanese and we live just outside San Francisco which has a a large Japanese population and therefore many Japanese restaurants. This food was exceptional, it opened my eyes as to what Japanese food can/should be. The rice was outstanding, I was never aware of such a difference there is in rice.
Many of the patrons appeared to be visiting Japanese business types, which usually is a good indication of the high quality of the food.
Anyway, a great restaurant..

“Nothing special, but OK”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

I'm relatively new to the Japanese dining experience, but have been to a few sushi restaurants in London so can compare a little. First off, the night we ate here there was a function on and all the tables in the upper area were taken, so we sat at the conveyor belt area near the kitchen. The place was awash with atmosphere from the Japanese function that was going on, and seated at the kitchen area gave us plenty to watch during our meal too. The decor is pretty modern and well set out, better than feng sushi for example.

The waiting staff seemed to be coping with the almost full restaurant, a bit slow to get our drinks to us, but we were in no rush. We ordered a good selection of sushi and sashimi, I particularly enjoyed the beef and asparagus rolls, possibly because it was one of the few dishes that didn't need some soy or wasabi to provide and enhance flavour. The sashimi was particularly succulent, but as I've found out from my few sashimi experiences so far ... relatively tasteless without the obligatory soy and wasabi. There was a good variety of tempura vegetables, but i felt they had soaked up too much oil and made for a greasy and unplesant mouthful. The spicy tuna rolls were SPICY indeed.

So, it seems a popular place, good extensive menu, prices seem comparable with other mid-range suchi places I've been. Some things better (decor, succulence of sashimi, good atmosphere), some things worse (greasy tempura).

“REAL Japanese!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2013

i stumbled upon this authentic Japanese restuarant one night, craving sushi. The fish was excellent and the atmosphere was great as well. The sushi bar is a great place to sit and have some miso and sashimi. Just steps away from London Bridge tube.

“Authentic high quality Japanese restaurant near London Bridge/ City”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013 via mobile

I've spent a lot of time in Japan and I consider Mugen to be one of the best Japanese restaurants in London. The food is fresh and delicious and totally authentic. The menu is vast and varied and contains regional specialities - all delicious. Yes, the prices aren't budget and are focused more toward the business clientele but its still cheaper than Tokyo!
