“The least crappy hostel in London, and free breakfast :D”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2014

I've been to many hostels in London, and i keep coming back to the New Cross Inn. Why? Price for one thing. I've paid more than double at other places that didn't even include breakfast and were pure crap. The staff here are friendly- it's a smaller place so the vibe is not really impersonal. It's a building with character, take that as you may. The cleaning staff do all they can to keep this old place in order. Breakfast is simple but included in the price, and enough to get your day started. There are 2 1/2 kitchens as well. I like the neighbourhood too. Maybe some people like to stay in the city centre, but the New Cross area isn't so damn crowded, and has lots of small, independent, budget takeaways, fruit and veg shops, etc. There's a large supermarket nearby, as well as quick transit to north of the river.

Flaws? Tons of long term guests, cheap bunks, somewhat crowded dorms and the (free) wifi only works in the cramped, small common room. Water pressure is iffy at best, but it usually works. No lockers in dorms; a small fee to use the ones in the hall. The NCI is above a pub, and across the road from a nightclub so earplugs are a must.

Now as bad as that may sound, you must rate this hostel by London standards. Bottom line- you could pay a hell of a lot more, but you're not likely to get much better. I'll be back!

The only good thing about this hostel is physical location. It is close to major brand stores and has relatively decent access to most of the things. But beware of dangerous neighborhood, especially during the night. Daily fights, drunk people, violence outside the hostel is normal,as well as wall busting sounds from downstairs bar. A lot of people who stay there are regular sad souls. This is what you become after all your life energy becomes extracted and you have no choice, but to stay in shady, dirty, overcrowded hellhole. You can see daily performance of these sad people in a community room, the only place with internet access. They would pretend to be professors, teachers, important people, but the sad reality is that they can barely afford the rent and cheap booze. Beds are uncomfortable, with old mattresses that are soaked in sweat, sperm and other body liquids. It is hard to shower all this stench - showers often don't have hot water, or are simply unavailable. Beware if you want to leave something in a fridge- it will be stolen, but don't worry you will get a dreadful breakfast in a morning.

Stayed here twice while working as a bus driver from Manchester. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Dirty prostitutes at reception. Gay and women. Middle aged dirty old woman from Portugal lives here who is strange but harmless. If you can humour jobless nerds who think that they are computer experts
And the pretentious happiness of sad people then I would recommend that you book for a long stay. The place seems overcrowded with tramps from Portugal and Spain who think that not having a shave for a month is no issue.
You have to share a room with these people.
Your clothes will smell of other peoples farts if you leave then in the room.
If you like the sight of tramps and middle aged Portuguese women that stink then book now!
Enjoy the 2cm wide duvet and try not to fall over the side of the narrow bed.

Stayed here last night, music from the venue club did not stop until five in the morning and woke up to find the front of the hostel had been cordoned off by the met police as a 19yr old had been stabbed at three thirty in the morning, and all of his blood stained clothes were still laying on the ground awaiting forensics. Toilet and bathroom dirty there was blood on the sink in our room which had not been cleaned before we arrived and I paid eighty pounds to stay here!!!!

I had a wonderful stay. I really loved this hostel. Everybody there is so friendly and helpfull. The receptionist has an amazing service attitude, she helped me to plan my stay there. She pointed me the best places to go, and explained me how to get there.

Whenever I go back to London, I will stay here again.

To preface, New Cross Inn Hostel is fairly clean, well-kept up, full of interesting characters, and highly affordable - thus my desire to stay there for my eight nights in London. The six-bed rooms are a bit cramped and up quite a few flights of stairs, but offer lovely views of the city and have a shared kitchen and bathrooms. While the free wi-fi doesn't work on the third floor (where my room was), the common room (where the wi-fi does work) is full of chatty Europeans on computers, BBC 4, and lots of beans-on-toast nights. The whole place is a bit creaky and befitting of the Thatcher era, but it has a charm nonetheless. It's also easily accessible by two Tube stops (New Cross Gate and New Cross) and a number of bus lines, which is handy.
That being said, it's also in a part of town that's a little sketchy, and what it offers in free breakfast (hope you like toast with jam, because that's all they offer) it lacks in security. I had managed to successfully keep all my belongings untouched in my third floor room until my last night at the hostel, when one of my roommates decided to relieve my wallet of about £100 pounds while I was out. The New Cross Inn Hostel staff did everything in their power to help find the missing money - we even sat through hours of CCTV footage - yet there was no way to retrieve my stolen goods. Had the hostel offered large lockers or, better yet, more security than hiding one's purse under the bunk bed, I would've given a four- or five-star review.

Room Tip: Rooms on the third floor are quietest, considering the bar below the hostel has a live band playing...
