Stayed at the VSC as a guest of a member and was very impressed on my arrival. Very polite and helpful staff directed me to my room which I believe was the ‘runt’ right at the end of the building on the second floor with views of a wall, a fire exit and the ducting and extractor fans from the kitchen, but then I wasn’t paying. With only three very small windows and two of them facing a wall, the room was very dark and cell-like although quite comfortable having recently been refurbished, so I believe.
We ate twice in the hotel and the food was great, especially curry night! Breakfast was ok, not great, but ok. Considering it’s a Forces hotel, someone could do with learning to fry an egg properly.
The hotel is fabulously located just off Marble Arch and Oxford Street (for those that like shopping) but personally a nightmare! Due to its central London location, don’t expect a particularly quiet and restful night’s sleep. Maybe it was just the location of my room and not being a city person, but I required copious amounts of alcohol (and I’m not a drinker!) to get through the night. Oh yes and they were constructing a new building across the road.
Naturally there are some great places to eat and drink within walking distance and I would recommend finding Zizzi’s, an Italian Restaurant on Wigmore Street - a great and very reasonable night out.
So to summarise - a great hotel for deserving members of the armed forces and their families and in a great location, but I was glad to get home to some suburban peace and quiet.
Take some ear plugs!
