“If you want to be insulted and treated like an idiot by a waiter, then come here.”
I entered this restaurant with a friend one evening some time after 10 p.m., and after having been to several eateries along Bold Street, all of which had already closed their kitchens. After greeting the waiter I asked him if the kitchen was still open and if we would be able to eat at this late hour. The waiter took it upon himself to speak to my friend and me in slow, deliberate tones -- implying that we were somehow intellectually deficient -- and to explain to us that Zorba's doesn't serve food, they wash clothes, it's a laundry. Not being a fan of this particular brand of 'humour' that aims only at demeaning and belittling the recipient of it while empowering the speaker, I simply repeated my question, at which the waiter began rubbing his hands together as if washing clothes, speaking to us as if we were for some reason unable to understand him, and repeated his 'humorous' comment about Zorba's being a laundry, at which my friend and I simply turned round and left.
Mr Waiter: if somebody asks you if the kitchen is still open and if it's still possible to eat late at night, you do *NOT* reply with sarcasm that aims only at belittling your potential customers while proving to yourself what a great, clever guy you are.
My friend and I are both professionals with a lot of disposable income -- income that we could potentially have spent on food and wine at Zorba's. A waiter like the one who spoke to us is a liability to the business because his insulting, demeaning antics, aimed only at boosting his own evidently very low self esteem, send customers away.
If you want to be insulted by a moron, then go to Zorba's. If not, do what we did: turn right round and walk back out of the door.
