I really wanted to like this hotel. Arriving at the hotel on a Saturday afternoon, I had to walk through a crowd of drinkers and smokers at the entrance. I know that smoking is banned inside hotels, but a little more thought of where to permit smokers to hang-out would leave a better first impression. There were bottles and glasses on the steps up to the front door.
The reception is great and the staff are helpful. Booking in was accompanied by rowdy, drunken shrieking from the bar area.
The room was usual Malmaison stuff, slightly dark, a little small but a great bathroom (especially the shower in the room I had).
The bar are was unusual in the fact that it was waitress service without an actual bar. I understood it was to be a 'wow' experience as waitresses appear though a dry-iced door with your drinks but there was no dry ice. They just appeared with drinks on a tray from a clattery kitchen. If there was a bar service would be faster and there would be more interaction with the staff and a focal point to the room. Also a slightly wierd combination of clientelle from the usual Liverpool wannabe gangster scallies to old couples who looked slightly out of place. It just didn't seem right and didn't have the usual Mal bar feeling. Also any beers that aren't lager (such as Guinness) are served in pewter tankards. Really at odds with the style of the place and just horrible to drink from.
The minibars in the rooms are empty. I think this is unique to the Liverpool hotel. If you want bottled water you need to buy it and save it in your fridge til later. Call me forgetful but at 5am with a monster hang-over, it didn't seem a great idea when my fridge was empty. Is everyone expected to nick the contents in Liverpool?
Breakfast was quite decent with loads of space (take note, Mal Belfast!) and a decent buffet and hot breakfast.
I also keep remembering the insistancy to sign immediately for drinks and breakfast. This seemed to be done with some urgency. Do they expect people to run off without paying? They could be more subtle.
Overall it was ok but there simply wasn't the atmosphere and genuine warmth I have experienced in other Mals. It just didn't gel. An odd mixture of styles, clientele and a slighltly odd ambience. Nice but not the best.
