My last stay at the Sir Thomas Hotel was with my husband in October 2006, I was celebrating my 50th birthday. I had stayed at the hotel on 2 previous occassions, Feb '06 and October 2005 with a friend. the only problems I have experienced were because of double bed instead of twin and twin instead of double. But I have to say that both times things were sorted out extremely quickly and on the first occasion the duty manager very quickly changed the room my friend and I had been given, to a better one. The staff are friendly and accommodating, you get out what you put in and if you take time to talk to the staff you will find them very pleasant. My husband had a bit of a laugh with them about the beds being twin instead of double. The breakfasts are good and just what you need to start a day on The Beatles trail or retail therapy (as Liverpool is an excellent city for diehard shoppers). It also has the advantage of being within 5 minutes of Mathew Street!
I have just booked to stay again in August for Beatles Week and have no hesitation returning.

  • Liked — Friendly staff, good accommodation and great english breakfasts
  • Disliked — A little dark in the restaurant
  • Tips/Secrets: — Talk to the staff they are friendly and don't bite

We booked for a special anniversary but had to postpone when my wife was struck by illness the night before. We were allowed to rebook for 3 weeks later, but my wife was still quite unwell and I requested a further postponment - this is when the catalogue of incompetence and contempt began.
Each date I tried to arrange was "fully booked" because Liverpool had a home match that week - football fans will know that teams do not play home matches on 4 consecutive weekends?
I was then told they did not do single night stays when I had originally booked a single night ? When I checked their website I discovered, lo and behold, that they did do single night accommodation.
After effectively being denied a rebooking I was then charged £120 without warning- the letter enclosed with the bill stated that my cancellation was due to work commitment when it was due to my wife's illness - another error on their part.
My discussions with the Assistant Manager about misleading information I may have been given from other staff were dismissed with an arrogant - I personally trained the staff so they won't have made any mistakes? The mind boggles.
When I requested a full explanation I was told by the assistant that they were under no obligation to be transparent about their booking policy - she followed this up with a, "I would have charged you in the first place and not allowed you to postpone"?
She didn't seem too concerned about my wife's illness and was definitely not the type of warm, friendly scouser that I normally meet in Liverpool.
I personally handed a letter to the 'real' manager politely requesting him to read and give me his views on events - that was nearly 2 months ago - no reply.
I folllowed this up with an email to the hotel - again it was totally ignored.
I must add that I have stayed in several Liverpool hotels and have always had a good time & found that staff warm, efficient and friendly and don't intend to allow my experiences with the Faulty Towers in Sir Thomas Street to colour my views of other establishments in the city. If you intend to stay here - good luck to you.

Management response from SirThomas, General Manager
(Management representative)
Feb 27, 2007
All of your 'complaints' are quite clearly backed up by our cancellation policy and terms and conditions of reservations. We allowed you to postpone your stay initially and quite clearly stated over the phone and in a subsequent letter that if the second stay was cancelled you would be charged. I have spoken to you directly as has my Assistant, however you were not happy with our responses, and i did not feel the need to enter further correspondence when i had already explained our reasons for charging for the cancellation. Ignored? No. Answer you didnt want to hear? Yes. We will always try to accomodate people when they wish to transfer bookings, however as a small independant hotel we need to have policies in place to protect ourselves.
Occasionally the Sir Thomas Hotel will do single night stays at weekends, however this is very rare and we are full most weekends. External sites offer a 1 night stay from an allocation of rooms that we sell to them in advance.

Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. Parking was a problem as we had to park our car in the carpark opposite which was very expensive. The room was very small but was clean. The price we paid included a full breakfast which was very good. The staff were reasonably friendly. Overall we found it very expensive and found a better and cheaper hotel in Liverpool.

This was to be a special birthday weekend for my 13 year old son, an avid Liverpool FC fan. We had tickets to Anfield but wanted to stay in a city centre hotel. I know Liverpool really well being an expat Scouse and the position of the hotel seemed ideal. We also wanted more than a basic B&B hotel as it was supposed to be a treat. When we booked they assured us that my son and his friend would be in a room next door to us as there were no interconnecting rooms. When we arrived they tried to put us in a room on the 1st floor and th the 3rd floor - duh! Eventually they found adjacent rooms on the 1st floor one of which was the disabled room. Then we were told that children were not allowed in the bar or restaurant on Friday and Saturday nights - and that included well-behaved 13 year olds. There is no lounge area so we were confined to our rooms. We ate out on the Saturday night at the Cafe Rouge opposite but we would have liked to have a relaxing pre-dinner drink in the hotel. Peaceful? no - they have loud live music every Friday and Saturday night. Although it stop at midnight we could still hear a back beat in the rooms. The rooms are not double glazed and the decorations were tired. A little more care and attention is needed if they want to be considered a boutique luxury hotel. I won't stay again and would rather go to the Marriott up the road. A word of praise should go to the staff - they were friendly and helpful but the attitude of the management is obviously not good. The boys felt they were not welcome - and trust me, they are discerning 13 year olds!

  • Liked — The staff
  • Disliked — The unwelcoming attitude to kids
  • Tips/Secrets: — Don't go at the weekend or with children

According to the Sir Thomas Hotel Website this is a boutique hotel.

It's not.

It's not cheap and they have painted the bedroom walls in a trendy grey colour. The similarity ends there.

I took my mum here for a weekend away. I'd booked a twin room, when we got upstairs it was a double room. We didn't really mind so I didn't bother complaining.

I've stayed in several well priced hotels on the docks before and looking back this would have been a better option.

If hotel claims to be a 'boutique' hotel I'd expect some attention to detail - it's the little things that matter. Here they had paid as much attention to design detail as a Travel Lodge might. Don't expect stylish bathrooms, toiletires or TVs (our remote didn't even work)...it's all white plastic kettles, anonymous shower gel clamped to the tiles, nescafe sachets and grubby curtains.

The room was SO noisy - I didn't sleep for two nights. I understand that the city centre is not a quiet place on a Friday and Saturday night but matters were made worse by windows that didn't even seal.

When I mentioned this as i was paying the girl on reception apoloigsed half-heartedly (she looked like she deals with this complaint a million times a day) and explained that they were having new windows put in but it was taking time to get them all done as it was a listed building. This is fair enough but they shouldn't be charging full rates for a room that it's impossible to sleep in.

Overall it's an ok hotel. I'm happy to saty in a budget hotel if that's what it claims to be, but when I'd spent a lot of money on what was supposed to be a treat, I felt cheated.

I wouldn't go back.
