Having stayed at the Formule 1 hotel in March 2007, we decided to return in December after celebrating our works christmas do around liverpool. It must be said, that the first time round although very basic, we found the hotel to be clean and felt no apprehension using the toilets/showers. However this stay was very different. As other reviews have pointed out the hotel doors appear to be open to anybody waking past late at night and we had a male banging on our door in the early hours demanding a cigarette! We failed to find a toilet which was clean and this included going up onto the other floors of the hotel. The room sizes are fine for the price but the small heater located in the room is very dodgy looking. We had damp stains on our carpet and found empty used glasses underneath the bed (obviously no cleaning had taken place between guests). The sheets left in the room for you to make up your own bed did look clean but the mattress cover for the bed was found to have stains. The reception staff could barely speak English and we were happy to be leaving the following morning. I would strongly advise females in small groups and families not to stay here as it does not feel a safe place to be. On return home I did look into making a formal complaint about the stay but the hotel does not accept emails and you have to send a letter to France, so i decided to just leave it. Although only cheap, the hotel should be clean and until this hotel cleans up its act and gets new management, stay elsewhere.

This is only £31 a night (and you can sleep three in a room) but the facilities are as basic as you can imagine, the rooms aren't clean and the hotel is noisy.

The toilets and showers are in the corridor and 'self cleaning' - they resemble public toilets (no seats) and aren't very clean at all.

I've stayed in much cleaner and more comfortable hostels than this.

  • Liked — Cheap (although you have to pay in advance, before you see your room and there are no refunds...)
  • Disliked — Disgustingly dirty.

I have stayed at Formule 1 hotels before. Normally they offer clean but very basic no-frills accommodation. I quite liked this concept. Although part of the multi-national Accor Hotels group, most of the UK hotels seem to be run by named people who I assume to be franchise holders.
My recent stay at the Liverpool Formule 1 has forced me to revise my view. I had booked it online the previous day and had, at the same time, booked breakfast at the stated price of £2.50. The Formule 1 brochure also states that their UK hotels offer breakfast at this price. On my arrival at the hotel, I was advised that the Formule 1 was now managed directly by the Ibis next door and did not offer breakfast although I could obtain it at the Ibis. When I enquired at the Ibis, I was first told that this would not be a problem. breakfast would be available at the published price if I asked for a "Formule 1" breakfast. Unfortunately this conversation was overheard by a rather sour young lady who I assume was in authority. She over-ruled the staff member with whom I was talking. She said that breakfast would cost £6.95 although, if I came before 6.00am or after 10.00am, I could have a fruit juice and a coffee for £2.75. I showed her my booking confirmation and suggested that the brochure and website price for breakfast should be honoured. Her response was that Formule 1 was a budget hotel concept so I could not expect the Ibis to honour prices quoted.
Apart from this, the only other problems were that no hand towel had been provided in my room although one could be obtained on request from a helpful guy on reception. There was a lump of used chewing gum on the light-switch on my bedpost. Two of the four showers and WCs on the corridor near my room were disgusting and unusable either because of debris left in them or because the self-cleaning system wasn't working.
Apart from that, my stay was fine! My impression is that the management of the Ibis next door regard the running of the Formule 1 as an added imposition and have no interest in maintaining even its modest standards. My advice to prospective guests would be that, until the management changes, Liverpool's Formule 1 is best avoided.

Oh dear. The purpose built hotel bears more than a passing resemblence to a prison! The gates do too and there is a knack of opening them. Going in the one fella working the desk that I suppose you could call reception wrote our room passes on a torn off peice of newspaper. When asked if the place could get "rowdy"- he replied "It can do, yeah, specially at weekends.". There are no toilets in your bare bones room. The only positive thing I could say about it was that I was a smoker at the time and could smoke in my room, which is now unusual unless you request it. The toilets (and showers) are quite obviously modelled on airplane ones - not the height of luxury! They're also self cleaning. However, if you like cheap and can sleep through the blitz, you're welcome to it!! Not in a great location but still the rozzer (police) stations right close by. I left after a night!!

  • Liked — smoking as standard

As i am writing this i should be staying at the Formule 1 hotel in Liverpool but as my friends (2 females) and i (female) felt so unsafe we are currently sat next door in the Ibis hotel reception area at 5.30am. When we got back to the hotel after a night out in Liverpool we found the front door to be wide open and people who werent staying in the hotel roaming the corridoors. When we got to our floor we found a guy unconscious on the floor at the top of the stairs. After we finally managed to get to sleep we were awoken by a group of 9 Irish guys banging and kicking at out door who were drinking, smoking and taking drugs openly in the hotel. When we didnt open it they continued, shouting abuse at us and threatening us. At one point the door was forced open and only because of the security latch being across they couldnt get in. We then spent 20 minutes holding the door shut hoping they would go away. They then decided that some of them were going to try and get in through the window. At this point we had had enough and using directory enquiries obtained the number for the ibis next door and the guy Nick (who was a total god send) on reception there came and rescued us.
I would recommend that if you value your life you do not stay in this hotel, the rooms are small and badly cleaned (there was traces of sick on our floor), the toilets and showers are down the corridoor and are communal (with no toilet paper) and worst of all there is no staff presence during the night so any problems have to be dealt with next door in the ibis. Had there been staff present we feel everyone would have been so much better behaved and we wouldnt have had the hassle we did. Over all this was a very disappointing end to our stay in Liverpool, i do not recommend anyone stays here as it has no form of security and it quite clearly just drop in centre for drugged up idiots.
