I cannot recommend the International Inn enough!
The hostel, which is independantly run, is located on South Hunter Street (just off Hardman Street) and is an ideal location for anyone who wants to be slap-bang in Liverpool city centre, whether they are sight seeing or having a night out!
The International Inn is excellent value at just £15 a night, and the customer service is quite simply second to none.
There are plenty of facilities to use, including a TV lounge, games room, self catering kitchen with free tea, coffee and toast, laundry room, baggage store and bike store.
I am from just down the road near Manchester and I come to Liverpool to have nights out with my friends who I met while I was studying in the city, and I have stayed at the International Inn 3 times already, and will be staying there many times more!
The other people staying at the hostel are very friendly and I have made many friends, including people from Germany, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland!
If you are planning to visit Liverpool, trust me, this really is THE place to stay.

I loved liverpool and I loved the International Inn. It's a bit of a trek from the hostel to albert dock (15-20min-- down hill, but then uphill back home). I stayed there for 3 nights in december of 2003, for 15 quid a night, and it can't be beat-- it was very clean, very friendly and a good location. it's on the edge of where liverpool becomes a bit dodgy (in my opinion), but i still felt safer late at night on my own in liverpool than in say, downtown chicago or Los Angeles. I stayed in a 7 bed dorm-- it was supposed to be mixed, but since it was a slow time, they just had women in it, and it was ensuite. There's a little internet cafe connected right to the inn, which is very handy, and inn is happy to answer questions and hand out information about the fair city.
I would highly recommend staying at the Liverpool Int'l Inn-- in fact, i'm headed there for my second stay!
