My son and I were touring England by rail city-to-city, and we wanted to tour out from major cities to get to know the areas without renting a car. We did this in both Wales (from Liverpool) and Scotland (from Glasgow). We used BusyBus in Wales and took the North Wales and Lake Country tours. This was one of those rare instances where the plan went just as I hoped. The 18-passenger buses are very nice (although we did get stuck sharing the least-desirable--back--row with two other travelers on a very hot, very long day - no air conditioning in the UK, of course!). BusyBus tries to hit a fair number of major attractions on each tour. Both tours provided a good mix of natural sights, archaic sites, and tourist stops. My advice to travelers who can swing it is to take along a packed lunch, because you will probably have to decide between eating and seeing something interesting otherwise. Both our tour guides in Wales were gentle, friendly, and responsible people, and the buses were clean and maintained. This is a great way to see a lot of Wales in a short amount of time, without dealing with driving yourself. One has to be somewhat patient, as not every single stop will be equally interesting to you, and the tour makes for a long day with a lot of driving. The drivers know the major things about each stop, and everything was all in good fun.
