Modern building, great location, generic business decor. Check-in staff pleasent and efficient, and (seemingly largely English) staff generally polite with a couple of exceptions at breakfast.
Facilities OK except temperamental wired internet connection in room 137 - but at least it's free. One or two other details need attention, like plug which doesn't let the water drain from the sink and the bed's not the most comfortable. Shame that you can't open the windows as well - feels quite stuffy.
Apparently the hotel currently has a recurring problem with room televisions switching themselves on and off, or so reception told my colleague when she was repeatedly woken during the night by her television coming on. There is no way to take the televisions off standby, which seems crazy in these more energy-conscious times.
Worst thing for me was leaving my iPod in my room and not remembering until the evening of the day I had checked out. Phoned the hotel and, after two attempts, was put through to a duty staff member. He was unable to check whether my iPod had been found as only his manager could open the lost property cupboard - who wasn't there until the morning. He did say that he would check the room (which had new guests in) and call me back, however when he did call back, I was less than convinced as to whether he had actually gone into the room and talked to the new guests. I caledl the following day and spoke to a Supervisor in Housekeeping who said that she had read a message from the night staff but chosen not to call me back. Her line was that the maids had cleaned the room, found nothing, and that she had personally checked to confirm that nothing was in there. Therefore by implication I must either be lying or must have forgotten that I did actually pick up the iPod and lost it somewhere else. Whilst she was trying to be polite, I did find the general attitude very defensive - e.g. not really letting me talk and cutting in with answers about their exemplary record in dealing with lost property, etc. She even told me stories of other guests who were convinced that they had lost stuff at the hotel, but who had later found out that it was their own fault and phoned back to apologise - tacitly implying that this would happen in my case.
I most certainly left my iPod in the room and no longer have it and nor, according to the hotel, do they. Apart from reconciling myself to an expensive replacement, I must say that I was not impressed by their response to my requests for help, and that I will be writing to the hotel. Meanwhile I would suggest to other guests that they double-check to ensure that they have valuable possessions with them before leaving. I don't think that I will stay here again, given the very close proximity of a Radisson, Malmaison and Thistle.
