My friend and I had a travelzoo voucher for half price afternoon tea which we had been looking forward to for ages, but were left a little disappointed. It wasn't dreadful, but certainly only worth the £10 each we had paid, not the £20 each it was supposed to be! The building is nice, although the lay out inside is a bit odd - sort of dark and dated and seating area is stuck behind a sort of half wall thing. Friendly staff and a half decent glass of something fizzy, but the rest was not great.
Sandwiches were made of that generic bread that's neither white nor brown, but whatever it's colour, still tasteless. The sandwich fillings were wafer thin and hard to tell 1 filling from another as there was so little of it.
the cakes were a little odd too - a tiny chocolate eclair that tasted strangely of lemon, a nondescript little biscuit with the same lemony flavour and a small scone. The scone was actually nice enough, but 2 bites and it was gone. Coffee was acceptable enough too, although we had to ask for a new cup as one of them was stained and looked like it had been in the dishwasher for 5 seconds maximum.
I thought the whole point of these offers was to tempt people into a place that they hadn't been to before by offering good discounts, be impressed, spread the word and want to return and pay full price? Not the case here I'm afraid - just a case of getting people in and making a profit and not really bothering whether anybody came back or not. Needless to say, won't bother going there again, can get coffee, cake and sandwiches elsewhere for less and actually enjoy them!
