“Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013

We go here all the time, in all weather. They so often have events on, the grounds are pretty and not too big, the audio tours are entertaining. There are few access restrictions in the castle itself so you feel like you've seen all it has to offer and the view from the top is inspiring.

Highly recommended for a visit

“Tattershall - a glimpse of the past”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

The beauty of the building and grounds. Obviously a lot of care and time and money went into rescuing this beautiful property from the sad neglect it had fallen into. As it is not furnished it can be left to the imagination to picture how it would have been when filled with people and possessions. Various events are organised here, so although the Castle itself is well worth visiting you can combine it with one of these to make a very full day out. Tall people remember to duck - doorways were not as high in those days as people were smaller on average!

“Keep going back”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

Fabulous Castle, keep returning with the kids ( national trust membership recommended )
You need the weather, small tearoom/shop on site, Castle impressive but bland as Castles go.
Take a picnic and stop off on the way to somewhere else !

“Worth a visit but not much to see”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

Tattershall castle is a unique and beautiful castle and most definitely worth a visit. The area is seeped with history and you are able to listen via headphones. The children can get an interesting little guidebook and the staff are most welcoming and informative. However, you do have to be fit as there are lots of stairs which are quite narrow in places (well it is an old castle!!), but you can stop off for a breather in between levels. There's not much to see, but sometimes there are people with dress up outfits and little activities, but I would check beforehand as this is only on occassion, our children got a little bored. The grounds are nice for a little picnic and the views at the top of the castle on a clear day are amazing, you can see Lincoln Cathedral and Boston Stump from there. The only disappointment is the lack of activities and the castle is rather sparse, however on days there are events, Tattershall Castle shines and definitely shouldn't be overlooked.

“A fine building”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2012

Take 700,000 red bricks and you can build a fine building. That's what Thomas, Lord Cromwell, did in the middle years of the 1400's. Thomas was Chancellor of England, and he built his castle as a home, at a time when most castles were built of stone, and as fortifications. Thomas's home must have been splendid. It is noteworthy as one of the finest medieval brick buildings in Britain. Much of the castle has gone but the Great Tower remains, courtesy of Lord Curzon who had it restored in the the years just before World War I. The countryside around Tattershall is flat, and it doesn't take a great feat of imagination to realize the great impression the Castle must have made on visitors who journeyed to see Lord Cromwell in the fifteenth century. Especially when recalling how small most folks homes were at that time.

The Castle is now owned by the National Trust. The staff are friendly and informative. There are audio tapes that explain the history of the castle, and generally help bring alive life as it has been lived in the building.
