Being a loose canon of sorts, myself and 12 mates decided that enough was enough and we had to try their flaming burger challenge. I mean, the thought of gratuitously gorging ourselves on what was claimed to be a ferocious opponent was too much to handle. We booked a table and laid down a deposit - can't complain at that, very reasonable.
When we got there we arrived at the bar and mentioned that we had a table booked. Now, at no point were we informed that we had to book the flaming burger and to be honest I suspect we didn't have to. However, because we had innocently mentioned that there might be 9 of us wanting to try the challenge (the others opted for the steaks), suddenly turning up and trying to order 10 burgers appeared to irritate most of the staff. Now, if you had a policy of booking this could be avoided :)
Needless to say this didn't win us any favours with any of the staff there and they were quite offhand with us and it was obvious we were "that annoying group" in the corner.
Well the titanic burgers arrived and we settled into a rhythm of eating. Steaks took quite a while to come for the others in the group though they appeared to go down OK. Now, I should have been suspicious at the challenge because I've never seen burgers like them and yet they were only a tenner. Go to the Student Union bar and I bet you could build a smaller burger for a lot more. It was only about half way through the first of the enormous beefburgers did we realise they weren't of the greatest quality and I can safely say I regretted the choice later, for the meat sweats were so outrageous I was bathing. I got the impression that the food was of a lower standard than the other food ordered simply because it was a challenge. I wouldn't have minded paying more if the food was of a better quality really.
Drinks were a little expensive but I guess with a chain you'll come to expect that.
Overall, I might give it another try there. Not for that sodding burger that's for sure - I still get nightmares of giant patties attacking me in my sleep. But seriously, the spirit of the challenge felt lost somewhere in slightly less-than-great meat...
Oh, and I did finish that colossus. The staff perked up when I waddled over to declare victory.
