Giving a client the choice of the Electric Bar at the Hilton or the Horse and Groom pub, to hear the horse and groom chosen initially sprang a surprise. My last encounter there had been a dark and dingy affair, heavy metal blaring out and a sorry pint of overpriced Carling in hand.
What a difference a refurbishment makes; for the first time in almost 10 years of living in Lincoln, the pub befits its name; decked out like a country farmhouse, with Ales on tap, the warm interior welcomes you in, specials written on chalkboards with decorative touches abound.
We ordered a variety of food, all settling on the Reverand James ale; being a lager drinker predominatley, and having already admitted to being a bigger football fan than a rugby one (both client, boss and colleague all big rugby and real ale fans), I was not about to order the usual. We were seated at a comfortable table in the dining room, and between us ordered Steak, Hake, and two burgers.
The food was brought out promptly, and was excellently cooked. The steak was garnished with vine tomatoes, the Hake generously covered in sauce. The Black and blue bacon burger (mine), was exceptional- a generous quarter pounder, topped with thick smoked back bacon had much flavour and was clearly home made, and the melted blue stilton was a work of art; having tried to melt stilton into a cheese-on-toast affair some time back, I know the dedication this involves (it makes your kitchen, curtains and floor stink for weeks). The home-cut rustic chips and fresh side salad just complimented what was a great plate of food, and reasonably priced at around £8.
both client and Boss were suitably impressed, would definitley be proud to take a client here again for a working lunch, as it is something a little different than the regular chain restaurants covered by the Taste card. Also considering bringing the girlfriend, as the intimate atmosphere really seemed to lend itself to something more. Will be going back, and will likely sample another real ale for the experience.
