A number of people recommended the New Walk Museum as suitable for the family. These days, we have to try to keep costs down so a free museum sounded too good to be true. But this place is charming - apparently it has changed a great deal over the years but the Wild Zone area is fantastic, really interactive - in fact the kids could even crawl under and into the 'areas'. There are microscopes for kids to use, plus lots of little boxes to open - they loved it. Some of the stuffed animals looked a little war-torn and tired, but apparently they have been in the musuem for at least 30 years so it isn't surprising. The dinosaur section was excellent, too. Unfortunately the Egyptian section was closed for renovation but there was still plenty to do.
As others have said, the cafe is pricey for what it is, but the gift shop is one of the best I've been in.
There was a DNA temporary exhibition upstairs which was very promising, but hugely over-reliant on computer exhibits; a good third of which weren't working (with no sign to say so) leading to a fair bit of disappointment for the kids (and me, to be honest).
But all in all a great free day out.
