Visited here on 4/5/13. £2.00 to park in the car park, so good value. Parking tends to be on a slope so remember to leave your car in gear & handbrake on. Unfortunately somebody forgot to do that & their car rolled back just as we were about to pass it! To get to the castle you go through the teashop/giftshop, you pay for parking in here & entry tickets. It was very busy outside the shop with people sitting around tables enjoying their refreshments. On the wall it displays all the entry fees & underneath that sign is another small hanging sign which states if you can manage the steep slope you can ask for a car pass so you can drive right up to the castle. Now I am asthmatic & really struggled up the slope, it was only when we had finished our visit & went to have a drink in the teashop where we first went in we saw the sign about car passes. If people sit at a certain table their backs actually cover that sign up, had I seen it when we first arrived I would have definitely asked for one. This sign really needs to be somewhere that will be seen more clearly. Some of the rooms in the castle looked quite nice but others were disappointing. There were huge cobwebs hanging down from some pretty stained glass windows, which distracted you from looking at the actual window. They had laid down carpet runner in one room but it wouldn't lay flat, you could very easily trip on it & fall over! The gardens were pretty but we saw two lots of steps in two different parts of the gardens that were broken and need repairing asap, very dangerous. Please note there are no tearooms up the top near the castle, which is a real shame. Because no refreshments were available there we were desperate for a drink so we left earlier than expected to get a drink at the shop down the slope but did not have the energy to walk back up again. Perhaps if there was a sign in the shop stating no refreshments at the castle, people would buy bottled drinks to take up with them. Would go back in a hurry I'm afraid.
