“A very disappointing afternoon tea”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2012

Recently attended afternoon tea following an offer in the Sunday Telegraph. Overall the experience was very poor, in particular:

On arrival at 3pm escorted into a dining room by a member of your staff who then proceeded to lay the table for them. This had not been done prior to arrival despite this being booked over a week prior. The dining room was empty therefore it was not a case of the staff not having the time poor to arrival to do this;

- When the sandwiches arrived they consisted of 6 finger sandwiches made from 2 slices of bread therefore equating to 1 slice of bread each! The finger sandwiches consisted of 3 cheese and 3 ham despite the menu stating their would also be cucumber, beef and tuna. Staff were never seen after again after the delivery of these therefore it was not possible to either ask for any more sandwiches or other fillings. No staff from the hotel came into the dining room to check everything was OK. Additionally, the sandwiches were served with a little lettuce and 3 slices of tomato depute this being afternoon tea for 2;

- The scones served were no more than 0.5 inches thick and resembled a flat pancake rather than a scone. They had been buttered while warm making the butter soaked into the dough making them inedible;

- The strawberry gateaux served had been previously frozen and was not defrosted fully before being served. It was not possible to eat either frozen sponge or fruit; and

- There was no choice of loose leaf teas - the options presented consisted of either tea or coffee. The tea served was in a Teabag.

Thanks to all management and staff for their flexability and overall genuine courtesy to our group. Especially for the early check ins and late departures. Rooms comfortable, food very tasty and reasonably priced.

I booked this as a one night stopover, and arrived much later than planned due to traffic delays. If I had been on time I would have left and booked in elsewhere. I had requested a second floor room but was advised that I had been given a free upgrade, to a quiet room at the back of the hotel -as there was a large party in progress at the front I was grateful. I ate a meal in the restaurant, basic pub grub menu but adequate and the service was good. The room did not appear clean, the carpet was stained and generally grubby, dust was obvious at the edges. The bed cover and cushions were stained, although the quilt and sheet were clean. The pillows were hard and lumpy. The bedside reading lights can only be controlled by the master switch by the door. The double glazing had failed and half the window was permanently misted. The bathroom was also dirty with a large crusted brown stain on the tiled floor where the toilet had obviously been leaking for some time the toilet bowl and flush handle were dirty. The back of the door was stained and dusty too. The shower curtain was grey instead of white. I was disturbed several times in the early hours with a group of men coming and going - drinking and urinating in the car park next to people's cars and making lots of noise. Breakfast was disappointing -hunt the clean plate, hunt the clean table, then finding the freshly put out sausages were only half cooked and still cold in the middle, having pointed this out I was surprised that the rest were not removed. Yes I did express my disappointment when I checked out and received an apology, too late unfortunately as the cleaning should be a matter for quality control -these were not short term issues but signs of ongoing poor standards.

Room Tip: If cleanliness is important to you avoid this hotel

Have just come back to from this hotel. There was approx 40 family and friends staying in the stage. We cannot thank the staff enough for everything they did for us all. They constantly went out of their way to help us enjoy our stay from providing early room check ins and extending our rooms on departures to suit flights, rearranging their bar area so that we could have a family meal for 30 people which was very comfortable. I would personally like to send this hotel a Big Thank You on behalf of the Byrne family for making our stay a very enjoyable and relaxing experience.

Room Tip: Ask for ground floor

Stopped two nights for £90 - so great value. OK rooms need some work but can't complain - had bath and tv, clean and comfortable - give this one a try! Could have had breakfast for an extra £10 and bar prices were very reasonable as was the restaurant.

A good hotel for business due to its location but the rooms are very very tired. My rooms lightswitch for the bathroom was defective and the movable portion kept falling out. The mattress was very tired and the bed creaky (good job I travel alone!)

Having said all of the above I slept well and the buffet breakfast was great. Finally, no free wifi in the rooms is unusual and disappointing for Best Western. Oh and no I doubt I'll be back, sorry.

I stayed for one night on a business trip. I would top rate for the staff, from the check in desk to the dinner team and breakfast, they could not have been more (genuinely) friendly. The hotel is old but really very good - a clean room with everything working and no problems at all, just outside of city centre. Very good leisure facilities and a great large park next door to enjoy in this loevly weather. I will definitely return.
