Myself and my partner travelled to Blackpool for a family wedding anniversary over the Easter Weekend. We have stayed in Blackpool a few times and had the usual naff B&B, we weren’t disappointed.
From the outside we thought the hotel looked quite reasonable, until we walked inside. We thought for a moment we had stepped out of the Tardis and it was 1963. We were greeted by the Hotel Manager who was very friendly and polite, but was crammed into the tiniest reception desk stuck under the stairs. Check-in time was 2.00pm, but when we arrived we were told our room wasn’t ready and to come back in an hour. Kindly, she gave us our key anyway and then let us leave our bags in the bar area. The bar clearly had not been cleaned from the previous night as it both looked like and smelt like a working men’s club tap room.
An hour later we returned, no one on reception so we made our way to our room, which still wasn’t ready when we got there. The cleaner came in and asked us to go and come back in 15 minutes, which we did.
We returned around 3.15pm and could take stock of what we had been given, room 15. My Great Great Grandma’s house is more modern then this hovel. The room was clearly ‘a make do room’ because the furniture looked like it was from a house clearance and they had picked out each item saying ’that will do’.
The furniture didn’t match, we had a white scruffy unit which had a TV and coffee making facilities on it, a brown wardrobe with 5 different coat hangers in it.(probably still in there from the house clearance) There was a mirror in the wardrobe with a light over the mirror. Surprise! When I went to turn the light on, it didn’t work. That was because there was no plug on the flex, which had been stuffed down behind it.
The carpet, which had very likely been there a lot of year’s ran through to the bathroom, please, who the hell has carpet in the bathroom!!!!
The bathroom wall fitting which was avocado green, fell off the wall when we tried to open the cabinet, the shower head came away from the wall when I tried to adjust the position.
The room wasn’t dirty, although there was a line of dust running down the line of the carpet which ran against the skirting board (which was scuffed and in need of repair, see photo) The problem was, the whole décor of the hotel, it was vile, un-inviting and shabby which gave you the feeling of it being dirty. If I had been staying in Blackpool more than 1 night, I would have checked out and gone elsewhere.
I nearly forgot, I went to reception to ask if I could borrow an ironing board, no one there, so I rang the bell. Two minutes later a guest popped his head round the bar door and told me that “he is behind the bar”. I asked the nice Scottish chap behind the bar if I could borrow an ironing board, to which I was told “oh, I don’t think we have one, I’ll just check and ask, oh, no, we don’t have one, I live here and even I don’t have an ironing board”.
If you don’t have expectations, standards or care where you stay, then stay at this hotel. If you do have standards and do not want to pay £68 per night for two people, then definitely, do not stay at The Windsor and Westmorland Hotel.
