Upon booking this hotel, I contacted the property directly - as the Hilton were offering a cheaper 2-night package for a Deluxe room on a Dinner (1st night), Bed and Breakfast basis.
The Reservations Manager matched the rate quoted by Hilton, but couldn't offer the complimentary dinner on the first night. My partner and I were willing to overlook this, as we were getting a hotel right next door to the Pleasure Beach.
As we arrived at the hotel, we were very impressed. It looked in very good shape, and as we checked in, we asked the receptionist for a top-floor room (as I'm a very light sleeper, and the usual hotel banging from the room above doesn't help) with Pleasure Beach views.
When we got to the room, we noticed that we were in fact given a top-floor room with a view of the run-down hotel opposite. A quick call down to reception and we were switched to a room on the penultimate floor (with Pleasure Beach views).
The first evening at the hotel was spectacular - the rooms were decorated to a high standard, had very comfortable beds and a view to die for. Next morning, the breakfast was faultless, there was an excellent choice of food and very generous serving times.
The second evening was when the fun and games began - giving the staff a chance to prove just how un-focused they are with their paying guests.
At approximately 7:15pm, there was a lot of noise coming from the room directly above - Furniture was being dragged over the wooden floor, cupboards & drawers were banging, people were constantly stomping over the entire floorspace etc.
By 8:25pm, the noise was still as loud and constant, so I called down to reception. I was told that "Police are searching the hotel" and "they will be finished by 8:30pm at the latest".
As this was not to be the case, we called back down again at 9:30pm. This time we were told that whilst they're unable to stop the police from doing their job, they'll have another word with them about the noise level.
The noise didn't stop until approximately midnight, and after a restless night's sleep, our 7:45am alarm (noise from the room above) went off. We went down to breakfast, and saw two policemen sitting in a car beside the car park exit barrier.
When we arrived back at the room, I decided to speak with the Duty Manager. I explained that we were upset that our second night was ruined by the constant noise from above, despite the couple of phone calls to reception. He then went on to explain that the noise from above wasn't from the Police (as we were told twice before), but from paying guests in their own room. Further, "as ours is a family hotel and the guests had paid for their room too, they are entitled to make as much noise as they want within the confines of their room". However, he did state that "had the noise been made in the corridor, he could've done something about it" and "now they've checked out, he can't question them and there's nothing he can do".
As I felt this reponse was not adequate, I wrote a letter to the Hotel Manager when I arrived back in Kent. Although he did sound sympathetic (explaining that I shouldn't have been treated like that by the receptionists, and in particular, the Duty Manager), he didn't offer any sort of compensation for my next Blackpool visit in July. Also, it turns out that the police searched the hotel because the Home Secretary and her protection squad stayed their on our 2nd night.
In fact, when I spoke with Management a few weeks later about compensation for our ruined 2nd night, I was told that the only thing that could be done was to offer me a "special rate" of £95 per night for a Twin room - the very same "public" rate quoted on their website.
All in all, a nice hotel, but the staff are generally too shallow for my liking. I'm going back to the Hilton in July - a place where I consider loyal travellers better rewarded and customers are valued.
