My husband and I stayed here for two nights in August 2009. Obviously this is peak season so finding anywhere with availability was a challenge. The website for the Hideaway looked amazing and we read the good reviews on Tripadvisor. We booked into a room described on their website as a 'smaller double'. It certainly was small but this wasn't a problem as we were out all day and didn't have a lot of luggage with us. It is clear from the website that some rooms have been recently and, judging by the photos, stylishly refurbished. Unfortunately our room was stuck in a 1980s pine timewarp. It had the feel of an average bed and breakfast with hotel prices. Perhaps this is to be expected in such a touristy area but it was disappointing given the impression we'd had from the website.
There is a restaurant on the ground floor which we ate in one night. The food is ok but nothing stunning and there is very little choice for vegetarians. Again the feeling was a bit 1980s with prawn cocktail and fruit kebabs both on the menu as starters.
On the plus side the free tea and cakes in the afternoon were welcome and very delicious and the building is on a quiet road outside the centre of Windermere. The room was clean and the service friendly and professional. Overall the hotel was completely adequate but we were expecting something a bit more special and were therefore a little underwhelmed.
