OK but not amazing - watch out for un-refurbished rooms

My husband and I stayed here for two nights in August 2009. Obviously this is peak season so finding anywhere with availability was a challenge. The website for the Hideaway looked amazing and we read the good reviews on Tripadvisor. We booked into a room described on their website as a 'smaller double'. It certainly was small but this wasn't a problem as we were out all day and didn't have a lot of luggage with us. It is clear from the website that some rooms have been recently and, judging by the photos, stylishly refurbished. Unfortunately our room was stuck in a 1980s pine timewarp. It had the feel of an average bed and breakfast with hotel prices. Perhaps this is to be expected in such a touristy area but it was disappointing given the impression we'd had from the website.

There is a restaurant on the ground floor which we ate in one night. The food is ok but nothing stunning and there is very little choice for vegetarians. Again the feeling was a bit 1980s with prawn cocktail and fruit kebabs both on the menu as starters.

On the plus side the free tea and cakes in the afternoon were welcome and very delicious and the building is on a quiet road outside the centre of Windermere. The room was clean and the service friendly and professional. Overall the hotel was completely adequate but we were expecting something a bit more special and were therefore a little underwhelmed.

i have just came back from a 2 night stay with my partner, we were in room 12 which does look good on the photos, but the spiral staircase isnt the easiest staircase to go up and down to the bathroom. room was lovely and clean but i do think it was quite expensive to stay. We had a meal there one night and it was lovely the 2nd night we went into Bowness which was alot busier. even though we wanted a quiet weekend away, this hotel was extra quiet, we seemed to be the last ones in at night as it was all shut up by 11pm and i felt like i was creeping back in. walk into windermere only 10 mins down the path, walk into bowness & the lake 20-30mins. not sure if i would stay again as i'm not young, but not old and did feel this kind of place was for the older type person. but did feel i had, had a realxing weekend with my partner but was ready to get back to the noise of my children!

Had never been to the Lake District before and this trip was a treat for my Husband's birthday, I am just so pleased I found The Hideaway, you could not better it. The rooms were light, airy, spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated as was our bathroom. The Hotel is in a very peaceful location, in lovely gardens, yet only a short walk from the centre of Windermere. All the Staff were excellent and very efficient. We stayed in the Hotel to eat one night and had a beautiful meal. The menu and wine list were excellent. Can't wait to go to The Hideaway again, just a great shame it is so far away.

I had been given a discreet ‘tip off ‘ that this hotel was good, but it was even better than I had ever hoped for.

Frequently, establishments do not offer the kind of customer experience you should expect. Places rely on the beautiful local location to attract their customers and offer over inflated tariffs and very average food with terrible service.
THE HIDEAWAY is in a different league! They offer tiptop service, accommodation and food, at fair prices.

Richard and Lisa, the owners, have worked hard to deliver to their customers a quality of service and food that other hoteliers should take notice off. If you want a benchmark of the highest order, here it is!

We arrived on a Tuesday morning, fully expecting to have to check in later as we were early. We were offered coffee by a very friendly team member and told our room was all ready for us! Also we were asked what daily newspaper we wanted, (not charged on top of our bill – other establishments take note!). Top marks in making as very happy and welcome within minutes!

Our room was fairly small, but we had been informed about this when we booked. It was clean, comfortable, cosy and quiet. We only heard the birds twittering in the garden as we had the window open in the balmy summers evening. We slept like logs!

The cakes and tea! All served in a very comfortable lounge. I had a rather yummy chocolate cake and the ‘partner’ had a delicious carrot cake. These were all included in our very reasonable daily rate. Just to add, service was quick and very courteous.

Ok, lets move to the food. We had dinner in the restaraunt for three nights. Let me tell you that Richard is a top-notch cook. The choices were varied enough to make your mouth water, but limited enough to know that everything was fresh and cooked to order. His cooking stems mainly towards good British food, cooked with an expert hand. Lancashire Hot Pot, (yummy!); lovely fresh Loin of Cod served on some perfect new potatoes.
I had a Fillet of Beef on one night, served with a light cream peppercorn sauce on Lemon Roasted Potatoes – it was out of this world. The meat was like butter and the side vegetables of creamed leeks and roasted Mediterranean vegetables was a treat!
Starters and desserts are also excellent – just really yummy.
This was food fit for kings! Oh, and the service? Discreet, friendly and just lovely.

We stayed for four nights - when we had to leave, my heart fell to my shoes! “Do we have to go?” – I declared to the other half! Indeed we did have to on this occasion, but let me tell you – “We will be back”, I promise!

Very nice. Free tea and cake in the afternoon was a nice touch.
